Position Summary
Morehouse College seeks a Postdoctoral Faculty Fellow to advance the Morehouse HEP Program through teaching, academic advising, student mentoring, and oversight of day-to-day operations and educational programming in multiple correctional facilities, including the Federal Correctional Institution in Atlanta (FCI-ATL) and several state facilities. This person will serve as the primary liaison between the Morehouse HEP Program and incarcerated students and staff across all partner institutions.
This is a two-year, non-renewable Postdoctoral position carrying both faculty and staff responsibilities within the Andrew Young Center at Morehouse College.

Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a PhD or the terminal degree in their discipline, administrative experience, and experience teaching or coordinating educational programming in carceral facilities.

Preferred Qualifications
Experience in higher education in adult prisons is preferred; however, candidates with experience teaching in juvenile facilities are encouraged to apply.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Candidates must have college-level teaching experience.
  • This position requires a high level of organization, close communication with colleagues, timely follow-through, and consistent leadership.
  • The BPI/AYC-HEP Faculty Fellow – Assistant Director must meet all clearance requirements with the Bureau of Prisons and the Georgia Department of Corrections.
  • This person must have personal transportation to the FCI-ATL and other facilities.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the Morehouse HEP student body at the FCI in Atlanta, as well as the GA-DOC sites where we teach;
  • Act as the principal liaison between incarcerated students and HEP administration;
  • Assist and coordinate with the program assessment specialist;
  • Participate in the recruitment and enrollment of incarcerated scholars;
  • Manage clearances and mandatory training for HEP-affiliated faculty and students, including mandatory training for faculty by the Bureau of Prisons and the GA Department of Corrections;
  • Ensure that classes, tutoring, and other on-site activities run smoothly and on schedule;
  • Coordinate study hall sessions with the HEP Writing Tutor;
  • Develop good working relationships with prison administration and staff;
  • Maintain day-to-day communications for general program operations;
  • Assist the HEP Director with the training and support of both the teaching affiliates and the student ambassadors;
  • Coordinate with faculty and the administrative assistant on the purchasing of books and printing of supplementary curriculum materials;
  • Teach one course per year inside the prisons and one course on campus in your discipline;
  • Attend the Bard Prison Initiative Summer Residency;
  • Present a public lecture related to higher education in prison, or a related research project;
  • Maintain accurate and detailed student records of all enrolled students;
  • Troubleshoot problems as they arise.
