Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Farm Manager to oversee the production of high-quality roughage across a large-scale operation spanning approximately 3,000 acres. This vital role involves managing daily farm activities, supervising staff, maintaining equipment, and ensuring optimal growth and health of forage crops. Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise farm staff, including workers involved in planting, harvesting, irrigation, and equipment operation to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Oversee all aspects of crop cultivation, including soil preparation, planting schedules, irrigation management, fertilization, pest control, and harvesting procedures.
- Maintain and repair farm machinery and equipment such as tractors, harvesters, irrigation systems, and power tools to ensure reliable operation.
- Implement animal husbandry practices related to forage crops that support livestock health and productivity when applicable.
- Coordinate irrigation schedules using modern systems to optimize water use efficiency while maintaining crop health.
- Conduct regular inspections of fields for crop health, pest issues, or equipment malfunctions; perform or oversee necessary repairs or maintenance tasks including welding or mechanical repairs.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards and environmental regulations across all farm activities.
- Manage inventory of supplies such as fertilizers, seeds, tools, and spare parts; order replacements as needed.
- Promote sustainable farming practices by integrating horticulture knowledge and growing experience to enhance crop yield quality.
- Train team members in the safe use of hand tools, heavy machinery operation including forklifts and heavy equipment, and proper animal handling techniques when relevant.
Qualifications
- Proven supervising experience in large-scale farming or agricultural operations with a focus on forage or roughage production.
- Mechanical knowledge with hands-on skills in equipment repair, welding, maintenance of farm machinery and irrigation systems.
- Strong understanding of animal husbandry practices related to livestock forage needs; equine experience is a plus.
- Ability to operate heavy equipment such as tractors, forklifts, harvesters, and power tools safely and efficiently.
- Familiarity with horticulture principles, greenhouse experience is advantageous for crop management.
- Knowledge of irrigation systems management and water conservation techniques.
- Physical ability for heavy lifting and performing manual tasks outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Basic math skills for measurements, calculations related to crop planting or feed rations.
- Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail in record keeping for maintenance logs and crop progress reports.
