Female Corrections Deputy

Summary:

The Corrections Deputy is responsible for supervising inmates of the Burnett County Jail while assuring a safe, secure, and sanitary environment in accordance with state statutes and established procedures and guidelines under the general direction of the Jail Sergeant and Jail Administrator.

Essential Functions of the Position:

The following duties are normal for this position. The person holding this position may be required to perform other duties of a similar nature or otherwise related to the position.

• Maintains jail safety and security. Makes periodic rounds, conducts inmate counts, and conducts security inspections and searches of inmates and inmates' quarters for contraband and any unauthorized materials. Enforces regulations and discipline policies related to the security and operation of the facility.
• Responds to emergency situations and take decisive action according to departmental policies and procedures.
• Monitors and operates all equipment and alarms located in the jail control center.
• Controls all access to the jail and maintains jail keys.
• Prevents unauthorized persons from entering or leaving the facilities.
• Maintains communication within and between shifts and keeps jailers, sergeants and management informed of any problems, complaints, or infractions.
• Complete and maintains all paperwork, documentation, and records, including jail logs and activities and incidents, according to applicable jail policies and procedures and State regulations.?
• Booking, fingerprinting, photographing, and release of inmates.
• Transport inmates to other correctional or treatment facilities, court appearances, and medical-related appointments.
• Escort inmates to court.
• Use appropriate levels of force to control violent or non-compliant inmates.
• Attends training and in-service, as required.
• Perform other duties as required by the Sheriff.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Must be 18 years of age or older. High School Diploma or equivalent. A valid driver’s license is required. Additional coursework in corrections science, criminal justice, or related field is helpful. Experience in corrections, law enforcement, or security preferred, but not required. Must be able to successfully complete Jail Officer certification training and CPR certification training within one year of appointment. Must successfully pass pre-employment and post-offer testing, including a background investigation, drug screen and psychological examination. Failure to pass these will result in the employment offer being revoked.

Minimum Physical and Mental Demands Requited To Perform Essential Functions:

Physical Requirements Frequent activity such as walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching (vertical and horizontal); using fingers, hands, feet, legs and torso in providing various security services. Proficient in the use of restraining equipment and self-defense techniques. Able to lift, carry and restrain inmates when required. Ability to manipulate keys, keyboards, operate levers and buttons; open and close heavy doors. Able to operate fire extinguisher and equipment used in booking prisoners such as monitors, cameras, radios, and recorders.

Language Ability and Interpersonal Communication requires the ability to make proper decisions and prompt responses in a variety of situations ranging from routine to those that are emotionally charged and potentially very serious. Must be able to communicate effectively with all kinds of people in situations or circumstances that are time sensitive, life threatening and stressful. Requires the ability to speak clearly and distinctly with poise, voice control and confidence in stressful situations. Requires the application of knowledge of human behavior when confronted with hostile or combative inmates in providing for their custody and security. Must be proficient in understanding and applying acquired subject matter knowledge in such areas as state jail standards, prisoner rights, and county policies, as well as the ability to endure physical and mental abuse. Requires constant alertness and attention to detail.
