Field Service Technician II/Welder

CHL Systems is seeking a Field Service Technician II/Welder who will work independently on installations, repairs, and service mechanical systems and perform advanced TIG welding. This role interprets blueprints accurately, executes rigging tasks safely, and troubleshoots equipment in the field with minimal supervision.
This position serves as an intermediate step in the Service Technician career path and provides a development pathway into the Service Technician III (Lead) role.

What You’ll Do
- Independently set up equipment and perform TIG welding operations as the primary welding process in both shop and field environments
- Install, align, and assemble industrial equipment and mechanical systems using engineering drawings, layouts, and work instructions
- Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical system issues, performing repairs, adjustments, and corrective actions as required
- Perform rigging and material handling operations, including lifting, moving, and positioning equipment in accordance with safety standards
- Provide training, guidance, and technical support to Service Technician Apprentices and Service Technician I personnel
- Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, and internal teams regarding job status, scope, and requirements
- Work in both indoor and outdoor jobsite environments, including manufacturing facilities and customer locations
- Participate in field assignments requiring up to 10% overnight travel throughout the Northeast and neighboring states
- Work weekend shifts up to 25% based on customer needs and project requirements
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of service, installation, and customer operations
Physical Demands
- Regular standing, walking, reaching, lifting (up to 50lbs frequently)
- Frequent bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in tight or awkward spaces
- Ability to work at heights, on ladders, and occasionally on scaffolding
- Must safely wear PPE including welding hood, gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, respirators (when required), hearing protection, and fall protection
- Use of hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, and precision instruments
What We’re Looking For
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required, technical training preferred
- 3+ years of welding, millwright, or mechanical service experience
Technical Skills & Knowledge
- Strong proficiency in welding, with TIG welding as the primary process (approximately 90%)
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, blueprints, and weld symbols
- Solid understanding and application of geometric principles for layout, alignment, and fit-up
- Advanced knowledge of rigging techniques, including the use of hoists, skates, come-alongs, and other lifting devices
- Demonstrated ability to perform mechanical troubleshooting and problem resolution on industrial equipment
- Proficient in pipe fitting and welding, including TIG, stick, MIG, and sanitary applications
- Working knowledge of pipe threading methods and equipment
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to independently diagnose and correct equipment issues
Work Environment
- Work performed in both indoor and outdoor environments, including customer site jobs
- Exposure to weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, and wind
- Exposure to mechanical systems, machinery, welding operations, noise fumes, vibration, and airborne particles
- Work may occur in tight, elevated, or low-clearance mechanical areas
- Tasks may involve operating or working around forklifts, cranes, hoists, and industrial equipment
- Must follow OSHA requirements, LOTO, hazard communication, and PPE standards
