Field Superintendent

JOB SUMMARY

The FIELD SUPERINTENDENT is responsible for directing and overseeing all on-site commercial roofing operations to ensure projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with contract requirements, manufacturer specifications, and applicable codes. This position provides day-to-day leadership to field crews and subcontractors, coordinates with project managers, general contractors, and inspectors, and serves as the primary on-site representative for the company. The Field Superintendent ensures quality workmanship, enforces safety standards, manages site logistics, and resolves field issues to support successful project execution and customer satisfaction across projects.


JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:


1. OVERSEES field staff, assisting foremen with crew leadership.

2. VISITS job sites daily.

3. CONDUCTS or participates in daily safety audits.

4. TRAINS field staff in safety, work skills and efficiency.

5. PROVIDES ongoing feedback to foremen regarding job performance.

6. RESOLVES complaints and grievances; assists with discipline when necessary.

7. SCHEDULES materials, equipment and deliveries, paying special attention to using inventoried materials.

8. MONITORS material usage, minimize waste, anticipate shortages and order materials as needed.

9. COORDINATES, supervises and manages subcontractors

10. MONITORS quality of installations.

11. ENGAGES with customers to answer questions and provide explanations.

12. SCHEDULES daily or weekly contact with customers to review progress.

13. DISCUESSES any outstanding issues with customers and other parties.

14. MEETS with customers to verify satisfaction with work and billing; deliver warranties.

15. REVIEW plans and sites, delegate crews and do all pre-job planning including but not limited to creating site-specific plans and work plan efficiencies.

16. ENSURES crews have information and instructions necessary to complete jobs.

17. SUBMITS reports and paperwork and otherwise coordinates communication between office and job sites.

18. INVESTIGATES incidents, near misses, accidents and thefts, and provides relevant documents, photos and assessments to the office.

19. DELIVERS all documentation to the office in a timely manner.

20. PARTICIPATES in manufacturer final inspection.

21. PARTICIPATES in regular review meetings with project managers.

22. DEMONSTRATES commitment to professional development.

23. PERFORMS OTHER ESSENTIAL DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of commercial roofing systems, including TPO, EPDM, PVC, modified bitumen, built-up roofing (BUR), metal roofing, and roof coatings.
  • Working knowledge of commercial construction processes, sequencing, and jobsite logistics.
  • Understanding of manufacturer installation requirements, warranties, and inspection standards.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations, safety programs, fall protection requirements, and hazard recognition specific to commercial roofing.
  • Familiarity with local building codes, permitting processes, and inspection requirements.
  • Knowledge of blueprint reading, specifications, scopes of work, and project documentation.
  • Understanding of quality control procedures and corrective action processes in a commercial construction environment.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret written information, and write legibly and informatively.
  • Ability to convey information, concepts, and concerns to people with differing communication styles.
  • Ability to perform math calculations relevant to roofing work.
  • Proficient in the use of mobile technology, project management software, and basic office applications for reporting and communication.
  • Ability to enforce safety policies, company standards, and contractual requirements consistently.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and manufacturer details.
  • Ability to work effectively in fast-paced, high-pressure environments while managing multiple projects.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and develop field personnel to improve performance and workmanship.
  • Ability to work extended hours, including early mornings, weekends, and overtime as project schedules require.
  • Ability to travel between job sites and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to conduct jobsite meetings, safety talks, inspections, and progress reviews.
  • Skilled in maintaining accurate jobsite documentation, including daily reports, safety logs, and quality checklists.
  • Effective communication skills for coordinating with project managers, general contractors, inspectors, vendors, and customers.
  • Strong leadership and supervisory skills with the ability to direct multiple crews and subcontractors across active job sites.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Two years of roofing experience

OSHA 10-hour card

Must have a valid driver’s license with a clear motor vehicle record


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Bilingual

OSHA 30-Hour Card

Specialized training: crane CCL, forklift, manufacturer-authorized trainers, man lift, rigging, roof system specific training, cool roofs, CERTA


SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Must pass a criminal background check

Must have a valid driver’s license

Must have and maintain a good driving record

Must pass preemployment drug screening

Frequently requires walking, standing, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, and lifting materials up to 50 pounds.

WORK CONDITIONS:

Works outside in all types of weather and may be exposed to extreme heat and cold, rain, snow, sun etc.

Work is performed primarily at construction sites, often at heights on rooftops, ladders, or scaffolding.

May involve working in noisy, dusty, or dirty environments.

Requires the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, and fall protection harnesses.

Travel between job sites is required.

May involve early morning start times, long hours, weekend or evening work, depending on project needs and weather conditions.


SAFETY SENSITIVE

This is a safety sensitive position due to driving requirements or job responsibilities whole include safety-sensitive tasks that require performing duties fraught with risk of injury to others where even a momentary lapse of attention may have grave and disastrous consequences.
