Field/Project Engineer Commercial Construction

+ Field Engineer

The Project Engineer supports the Project Manager and the Superintendent in the planning, coordination, and execution of commercial building construction projects from preconstruction through closeout. This role handles technical, administrative, and on-site tasks, with a strong emphasis on document control, subcontractor coordination, schedule tracking, procurement, safety/environmental compliance, and ensuring accurate project records and communication. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, proactive, and proficient with modern construction management software platforms.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist Project Managers and Superintendents with planning, coordination, and execution of commercial construction projects, including pre-construction activities (job walks, scope clarification, cost estimates/proposals, material take-offs.
  • Support strategies to meet project goals in price, schedule, and quality.
  • Establish, monitor, update, and communicate project schedules using Microsoft Project.
  • Assist in developing and administering project orientations.
  • Manage project documentation and control: RFIs, submittals (review process), change orders (assist in writing), meeting minutes, redlines for as-builts, progress reports, and organized records.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, architects, engineers, owners, suppliers, and internal teams.
  • Participate in subcontract pre-activity meetings and daily field coordination.
  • Prepare subcontracts, purchase orders, ensure correct cost coding, manage rentals/material procurement, and assist with subcontractor scope review.
  • Perform field inspections/oversight: monitor progress/compliance with contract documents, specifications, and safety requirements; identify field issues; manage logistics (including logistic maps).
  • Proactively identify potential issues, facilitate solutions, monitor project budgets/cost reports, document changes, and support change management processes.
  • Oversee safety and environmental compliance: prepare work plans, JSAs/JHAs, manage safety reports/enforcement/incident management; act as environmental coordinator; conduct mandatory training; handle waste disposal/recycling; access regulatory requirements for waste, water, and air quality.
  • Monitor equipment needs/repairs; acquire building permits; compile documentation for operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Conduct and document project progress meetings; prepare progress reports with photo documentation.
  • Manage project closeout for timely completion.
  • Maintain professional relationships with all project stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or related field OR 1–5 years of direct experience in commercial construction (or equivalent).
  • Strong understanding of construction documentation, project workflows, submittals/RFIs/change orders, and field coordination.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, problem-solving, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Current Driver’s License required; UA/7-Year Background Check required upon acceptance.

Preferred Skills / Experience

  • Experience using Procore, Bluebeam Revu, and Microsoft Project.
  • Proficiency in construction management software and digital tools (e.g., Procore, Bluebeam Revu, Microsoft Project).
  • Familiarity with scheduling, cost tracking, subcontractor management, estimating self-performed/subcontracted work, and safety/environmental practices.
  • Internship or prior experience with a general contractor or construction management firm.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salaried/Exempt Position
  • Pay range: $60,000 – $85,000 annually, commensurate with experience
  • Comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, vision, life insurance, and a matching 401k; short-term disability insurance; PTO accruing immediately upon hire.

Working Conditions

  • On Site
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday
  • Work Location: Primarily at project sites, with some office time
  • May require extended hours during critical project phases

FLSA Status: Salaried/Exempt

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $60,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
