Finance Extern - Finance - PRN 0.4 (as needed)

In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Finance Extern provides support to the Finance team while gaining hands-on experience in financial analysis, accounting processes, and healthcare financial operations. Under the guidance of finance leadership and analysts, the extern will assist with financial reporting, data analysis, budgeting activities, and basic accounting functions. This role offers exposure to key financial systems, reporting tools, and operational processes that support organizational decision-making. The externship is designed to provide practical learning opportunities that strengthen the student’s understanding of financial management, accounting practices, and analytical skills in a healthcare environment. Through participation in real-world projects and collaboration with finance professionals, the extern will develop foundational experience that prepares them for potential future roles such as Financial Analyst or Accounting Analyst within the organization. Job Functions:

  • Assists the Finance and Accounting teams with financial reporting and analysis, including gathering data, preparing spreadsheets, and supporting monthly financial statement preparation.
  • Supports the month-end closing process by assisting with reconciliations of assigned accounts, reviewing statistical data, and helping validate financial and operational metrics.
  • Assists with budget preparation and financial planning activities, including compiling departmental budget information and supporting the use of budget and reporting software.
  • Participates in financial and statistical data analysis projects to help identify trends, variances, and opportunities to improve operational and financial performance.
  • Supports the preparation of reports for internal leadership and external stakeholders, including financial summaries, statistical reports, and presentations.
  • Assists with maintaining financial and statistical tracking tools, including spreadsheets and reporting databases used for budgeting, forecasting, and cost analysis.
  • Observes and assists with key accounting processes, including journal entries, general ledger review, and asset and liability reconciliations.
  • Provides support during audit preparation and compliance reporting, including organizing documentation and assisting with workpapers.
  • Gains exposure to financial systems and tools such as budgeting software, reporting platforms, and accounting systems while learning best practices in financial data management.
  • Collaborates with finance leadership and analysts on special projects aimed at improving reporting processes, financial operations, or system efficiencies.
  • Develops foundational knowledge of healthcare finance and accounting practices, preparing the extern for potential future roles such as Financial Analyst or Accounting Analyst within the organization.
  • Learn all aspects of the Accounts Payable disbursement process.
  • Assumes all other duties and responsibilities as necessary.

Minimum Education/Experience Required:

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Junior or senior standing required.

Special Knowledge, Skills, Training:

  • Basic knowledge of accounting and financial principles obtained through coursework.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, with the ability to work with spreadsheets and financial data.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present information clearly.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when working with financial and organizational data.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a professional team environment while also demonstrating initiative and willingness to learn.

Compensation Details: Education, experience, and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended.
