<Job Overview>
Reporting to the COO, this role is an integral part of the LA Commons team. The Finance Manager will oversee daily accounting operations, manage cash flow forecasting, month-end close, financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with nonprofit financial regulations. This position is part of a highly collaborative team across all departments within LA Commons, including Community Arts, Grants and Contracts, Development, Operations, and a third-party bookkeeping service.
Successful candidates for this position should have non-profit accounting experience, enthusiasm for LA Commons' mission, possesses an attention to detail and a service orientation
<Responsibilities>
Accounting
- Manage the month-end closing process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, including the preparation and submission of monthly journal entries and balance sheet reconciliations
- Prepare and submit monthly account reconciliations, including bank accounts, credit cards, petty cash, receivables and payables aging
- Process weekly accounts payable and receivables, invoices and payment processing, including collecting and maintaining documentation
- Supervise and mentor the Operations Coordinator to ensure smooth operations across payables and vendor administration
- Support preparation of Independent Contractor Agreements, amendments, and stipend agreements
- Ensure the procurement of goods and services are in line with federal and other grant regulations.
- Import biweekly payroll entries and classify in accordance with grant reporting requirements
Budgeting, Cash Flow & Reporting:
- Work closely with the COO to manage cash flow and ensure the financial health of the organization.
- Assist in preparing the annual budget and monitoring financial performance to ensure alignment with
- strategic goals.
- Lead development of proposal budgets and budget modifications for funders;
- Provide monthly Program budget updates to Department Heads ensuring that data is clear, accurate, and actionable.
- Support COO in preparing for quarterly Board meetings
Development, Grants, and Contracts
- Partner with the Grants and Contracts Manager to create, track, and report on financials for private and institutional funders
- Submit invoices according to funder requirements and GMP best practices
- Ensure proper financial tracking of funds and compliance with grant requirements.
- Maintain a schedule of donor reporting dates, and prepare fiscal reports for donors as needed and requested by leadership
Audit & Compliance:
- Develop, document and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards, GAAP, and all applicable regulations, as well as LA Commons fiscal policies and procedures (e.g. cost allocation, procurement, reporting, etc.); and
- Organize, secure and oversee maintenance of all financial files in alignment with best practices and audit needs;
- Prepare for and support annual audits, ensuring timely and accurate documentation and reports.
Systems and Process Management
- Update and develop, alongside the COO, financial procedures and systems for newly independent 501 c3.
- Serve as the primary contact for external bookkeeping service.
- Continuously seek improvements to procedures and processes to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
<Requirements>
- 3+ years experience in accounting, particularly fund-restricted accounting.
- Strong familiarity and practical experience with GAAP and managerial accounting
- Proven ability to manage detailed accounting tasks, meet deadlines, and communicate financial data effectively.
- Demonstrated experience in grant reporting, both for contracts/invoice submissions and grant awards for the government, foundations and corporations.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement fiscal systems reviews and changes
- Excellent organizational skills with a strong attention to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize competing responsibilities
- Proficiency with Accounting software (MonkeyPod a plus), Excel, Google Workspace
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively
- Positive and creative attitude, and comfort with embracing challenges
- Demonstrated aptitude for synthesizing constructive feedback
- Experience in preparing for and participating in audits is a plus.
- Access to reliable transportation within LA County for in person meetings
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $28.98 - $38.30 per hour
