Finance & Technology Intern

Finance & Technology InternJob Summary

We are seeking a motivated and entrepreneurial Finance & Technology Intern to support the development of practical software tools, apps, automations, and financial workflows for a CPA firm and affiliated professional-service businesses.

This is a paid internship for a candidate interested in the intersection of finance, accounting, tax, software development, AI-assisted coding, and business growth. The intern will work closely with the firm’s principal on projects designed to drive user adoption, attract potential customers, and support the firm’s core services.

This is not a traditional accounting internship and not a traditional software development internship. The role is intended for someone who wants to understand how finance, accounting, tax, and technology work together in a real business environment. The intern will help develop apps and tools that may be offered free or at cost to drive traffic to services provided by the CPA firm and affiliated firms.

The position is primarily onsite, not remote. The firm’s principal will be heavily involved in the work, strategy, and development process.

Depending on the success of the projects and the candidate’s performance, the internship could potentially lead to a long-term position after graduation, but candidates should not rely on or assume that a permanent position will be available.

Duties

  • Assist with developing practical apps, calculators, dashboards, automations, and workflow tools related to finance, accounting, tax, business advisory, and affiliated professional services.
  • Use AI-assisted coding and development tools such as Claude Code and/or Replit to help build, test, and refine software projects.
  • Help translate finance, accounting, tax, and business concepts into user-friendly software features and client-facing tools.
  • Assist with creating apps or resources that may be distributed free or at cost to drive user adoption, traffic, and customer leads for the firm’s core services.
  • Support the creation of internal tools that improve CPA firm operations, client onboarding, workflow management, document collection, reporting, and service delivery.
  • Help test software features, identify bugs, document issues, and suggest practical improvements.
  • Assist with writing product requirements, user flows, feature descriptions, testing instructions, and process documentation.
  • Learn basic accounting, bookkeeping, tax, financial statement, and business advisory concepts under supervision.
  • Assist with organizing financial or tax information, preparing basic workpapers, and supporting client-service workflows when appropriate.
  • Participate in business development discussions involving user adoption, customer acquisition, app strategy, product-market fit, and monetization opportunities.
  • Help develop educational tools, calculators, guides, or app-based resources that make tax, accounting, finance, or business concepts easier for users to understand.
  • Collaborate directly with the firm’s principal on business, technology, accounting, and finance initiatives.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Analytics, Information Technology, Entrepreneurship, Business Administration, Economics, or a related field.
  • Candidates pursuing a primarily technology-focused degree, such as computer science, software engineering, information technology, data analytics, or a similar field, must also be pursuing a minor, concentration, certificate, or meaningful coursework in business, finance, or accounting.
  • Must be familiar with Claude Code and/or Replit.
  • Strong interest in finance, accounting, tax, business, and technology.
  • Comfortable working with AI-assisted coding tools and learning new software platforms.
  • Basic coding experience is preferred, especially with tools or languages such as JavaScript, Python, SQL, HTML/CSS, or similar technologies.
  • Familiarity with Excel, Google Sheets, databases, dashboards, workflow tools, or automation platforms is helpful.
  • Interest in building practical software that solves business problems, not just technical exercises.
  • Willingness to learn accounting, tax, bookkeeping, client-service, and financial workflow concepts.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work primarily onsite and collaborate directly with the firm’s principal.
  • Professional judgment and ability to handle confidential client, firm, and business information.
  • Patience and curiosity when working through unfamiliar finance, accounting, tax, or technology problems.

Compensation

This is a paid internship.

General internship work will be paid at an agreed internship rate. If the candidate performs substantive tax, accounting, bookkeeping, or similar professional work, that work will be compensated at appropriate market rates for that type of work, rather than at a general intern rate.

Compensation will depend on the candidate’s skills, responsibilities, and the nature of the work assigned.

Work Arrangement

This position is primarily onsite.

This is a hands-on, collaborative role. The intern will work directly with the firm’s principal, who will remain closely involved in the strategy, development, and decision-making process.

This role is best suited for someone who wants direct mentorship, practical business exposure, and the opportunity to help build tools that may be used in real client-service and customer-acquisition environments.

Long-Term Opportunity

Depending on the success of the projects, the growth of the firm’s technology initiatives, and the candidate’s performance, this internship may potentially lead to a long-term position after graduation.

However, a long-term position is not guaranteed. Candidates should view this as a paid, hands-on internship and project-based learning opportunity, not as a guaranteed path to permanent employment.

Why This Role Is Different

This internship combines areas that are usually separated into different roles:

  • Finance
  • Accounting
  • Tax
  • Software development
  • AI-assisted coding
  • App development
  • Business development
  • User adoption
  • Customer acquisition
  • CPA firm operations
  • Professional-services technology

The ideal candidate is someone who wants to learn how software can be used not only as a technical product, but also as a business-development engine for finance, tax, accounting, and advisory services.
