Financial Bookkeeper/Controller

Principal Purpose:
To support the mission and vision of Marshall United Methodist Church through the following focus areas:

  • Be instrumental in ensuring that all the congregation have timely and accurate reporting of budget and expenses
  • Will work with direct supervision of the Lead Pastor. Selection, hiring, performance review and any necessary disciplinary action will be the responsibility of the Shepherd’s Council

Key Responsibilities:

  • Keeps the financial records of the church
  • Responsible for managing cash flow, paying bills, processing payroll, and generating invoices and giving records
  • Pays and records all taxes
  • Maintains non profit 501(d)3 status with annual filing with Michigan LARA
  • Issuing monthly Financials to Staff, Shepherd’s Council, Financial Team
  • Reviews the Balance Sheet and employee timesheets with the Pastor
  • Monitor and tracks all Designated Funds
  • Performs all District and Conference Reporting required
  • Works with an approved Auditor on completing the Annual Audit
  • Helps develop the Annual Budget

Preferred Qualifications:

  • High school diploma with accounting training preferred
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Ability to use office equipment and computer systems (namely QuickBooks and Breeze) effectively
  • Ability to multi-task
  • Strong organizational skills

Working Conditions:

This position is in person in a busy, office setting. Punctuality and responsiveness to the needs of staff and parishioners is paramount. Physical requirements of this position may include: climbing, standing, stooping, typing and lifting up to 15 pounds. This position has possible in person daytime hours from around 8:45am-1pm Monday thru Thursday and is anticipated to be 20-25 hours a week. Remote or hybrid remote work may be possible upon review. Flexible scheduling is a perk of the position. Additional hours may be required at year end for Conference reporting and annual audit

Review/Evaluation:

You will report directly to the Senior Pastor. An initial performance review will be completed after 90 days. A progression and performance review will be conducted afterwards on an annual basis to assess performance, discuss alignment with MUMC’s vision and goals, and to modify job requirements, as the need may arise. This position is at will and therefore employment may be terminated by either party upon notice in writing to the other party that complies with Employment Standards for the State of Michigan.
