Role Overview
Houston Yacht Club (HYC), a private 501(c)(7) social club, is seeking a meticulous and experienced Contract Controller to oversee our financial reporting and ensure the integrity of our accounting operations. This role is critical in providing the Board of Directors and General Manager with accurate financial insights to guide the club’s success.
HYC is located in La Porte, TX on the western shore of upper Galveston Bay. It has a membership base of 300 families across a number of membership classes. The grounds includes a 27,000-square-foot clubhouse facility as well as a 185-slip marina. The club generates total revenues of $3.5M and has assets of $2.7M.
The Controller will serve as a strategic advisor to the General Manager/COO and Finance Committee on all financial matters. This role will also supervise the workflow of the Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable managers, ensuring all transactional data is captured correctly. This position reports directly to the General Manager.
Key Responsibilities
- Financial Reporting & Management: Oversee preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, including balance sheets and profit and loss statements. Ensure financial decisions align with the Club’s mission, values, and member-first philosophy
- Budgeting & Forecasting: Assist in preparing the annual operating and capital budgets and create forecasts.
- Accounting Operations: Oversee accounts payable, receivables, cash reconciliations, and payroll.
- Tax Returns & 501(c)(7) Compliance: Oversee all Club tax filings and ensure compliance, including preservation of tax-exempt status.
- Audit Preparation: Oversee the external audit/review process, including preparation of all materials and schedules, and preparation of the Club’s financial statements
- Finance Committee Support: Attend Finance Committee meetings to present financial results, provide insight on financial performance and provide strategic financial recommendations.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum 5–7 years of accounting experience, preferably in a private club, HOA, or hospitality environment.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CMA designation preferred.
- Technical Skills: Proficiency in QuickBooks/Excel.
- Knowledge: Strong understanding of 501(c)(7) tax regulations and Texas state sales tax requirements for private clubs.
- Communication: Ability to distill complex financial data into clear summaries for the General Manager, Treasurer and Board.
Work Environment
- This is a contract position requiring roughly 20 hours per month, with a heavy concentration during the monthly "close" period (typically the first 10 days of the month).
- This role is primarily remote with a moderately flexible schedule. This position will be expected to be on site a minimum of 1 day every other month.
