Financial Counselor

Schedule: Monday – Friday 8AM-5PM;

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Responsible for setting up payment arrangements with patients. Handles payments from patients in person or via phone.
  • Assists patients with HFAP and Medicaid and Victims of Crimes applications.
  • Responsible for collection of deductibles, co-insurances and co-pays prior to elective procedures.
  • Responsible for notifying self-insured patients prior to date of service the cost and set up payment arrangements.
  • Responsible for calling patients on the collection list and other collection reports.
  • Communicates with collections agencies, including appropriate reporting. Responsible for reporting payments to collection agency and setoff from receipt list that is worked daily.
  • Responsible for working the private pay list for in house patients. Contact will be made by financial counselor.
  • Responsible for money, providing change to patients, employees, and other departments.
  • Safe keeping of auxiliary keys.
  • Responsible for working the Notice of Intent from setoff.
  • Notify patients if credit/debit card payment declines.
  • Input/update insurance information along with other demographic information when received from patients.
  • Maintains compliance with all applicable rules and regulations related to collections efforts.
  • Must possess outstanding customer service skills.
  • Must use proper telephone etiquette.
  • Participates as a team member and is accountable for own work responsibilities.
  • Is fully knowledgeable of all safety/emergency policy and procedures of the medical center.
  • Responsible for completing refund slips.

Physical Demands:

  • Combination of sitting, standing, bending, light lifting and walking.
  • Requires the ability to manage stressful situations.
  • Occasional stress from varying demands.

Qualifications:

  • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years of work experience in customer service or related fields.
  • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, billing practices, and coding.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suites.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Proficient mathematical skills.
  • Outstanding people skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Involves frequent personal and telephone contact with patients.
  • Work may be stressful at times. Interaction with others is constant and interruptive.
  • Contact involves dealing with sick people.
