Fire / burn Crew Member- spring

Job Overview
Join our prescribed fire / custom burn team as a Fire Crew Member during the spring season! Your flexibility, dedication, and teamwork will help put "good fire" on the ground in the southeast Nebraska and Kansas. This position is highly variable in timing and duration as fire is very weather dependent. We are currently looking at 15-18 fire days this spring, and the position pays by the day. Work may continue until May but will begin winding down by mid-late April.

With a focus on high quality burn application and thorough followup, we at Bluestem Habitat are expanding burn operations in the central east Great Plains. This fire position contributes meaningful impact for ranches, farms, and wildlife habitat.

Duties

• Assist with prescribed fire ignition, holding, and post-ignition observation.
• Operate firefighting tools, vehicles, and equipment safely and efficiently.
• Support team members in setting up and cleanup/tool rehab.
• Participate in mechanical tasks like equipment maintenance, fueling, and basic repairs
• Follow protocols to ensure personal safety and team cohesion in high-pressure situations
• Assist with logistical support such as transporting personnel or supplies

Requirements

• Ability to perform heavy lifting and physically demanding tasks for extended periods
• Mechanical knowledge and/or experience with firefighting equipment is a plus
• Valid driver’s license
• Strong communication skills
• Adjust to short notice changes- location, postponement, modified start day/time, wise response to unfavorable fire behavior, etc

• Willingness to work long hours outdoors in varying conditions including smoke, heat, and dust

Prior experience is not required but pay rate will reflect experience.
