Fire Cadet Volunteer

We are looking for someone to join Team Yuma as a Fire Fighter Cadet, volunteering with the Yuma Fire Department. The ideal volunteer will be team-oriented, adaptable, and dependable.


Under close supervision, attends Yuma Fire Department Cadet structured training to learn skills and proficiency levels according to the departmental guidelines.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: - Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include any of the following representative duties, knowledge, and skills. This is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and duties performed by incumbents of this class; volunteers may be assigned duties which are not listed below; reasonable accommodations will be made as required. The volunteer description does not constitute an employment agreement and is subject to change at any time by the employer. Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Attends classroom training sessions to learn office procedures, technical and/or vocational procedures, processes, practices, equipment, and protocols required to complete cadet program.
  • Assists with routine maintenance of station and apparatus.
  • Participates in physical conditioning training and testing; maintains required levels of physical fitness to complete cadet program.
  • Adheres to program rules and regulations, including safety protocols and appearance guidelines.
  • Supports the relationship between the City and the general public by demonstrating courteous and cooperative behavior when interacting with citizens, visitors, and City staff; promotes the City goals and priorities, vision, values and the “Yuma Way”, and complies with all City policies and procedures.
  • Maintains absolute confidentiality of work-related issues and City information; performs other duties as required or assigned.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Good interpersonal skills, follow verbal and written instruction, read and understand training materials, and the ability to relate/interact positively with others. The successful candidate must:

  • Possess a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Possess CPR provider card
  • Be currently enrolled in an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) B or P class and must obtain certification within a year of class completion. Arizona EMT certification and/or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification is preferred.
  • Successfully complete a background check.
  • Be willing to maintain academic, safety, physical, and professional standards in accordance with Department policies.
  • Commit to 20 hours per month (8 hours of class training and 12 hours of ride along time)


PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Volunteer work is performed in a classroom environment, and in the field for training exercises. Requires strenuous physical efforts and Cadets are expected to successfully meet physical and academic demands related to the program.


2026 Fire Fighter Cadet Timeline

Application Process: Apply through Neogov.com (governmnetjobs.com). Position will close on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. or when the first 60 applications are received.

Physical Agility Test: Qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the Physical Agility Test. It is tentatively for the week of March 16, 2026, at the City of Yuma, Public Safety Training Facility, 3575 S. Ave 4E (Gary Mass), Yuma, AZ 85365.

Panel Interviews: Applicants who pass the Physical Agility Test will be invited to attend Panel Interviews. Tentatively scheduled for March 19, 2026, March 20, 2026, and March 25, 2026.

Background Check and Onboarding Documentation: Required prior to being accepted into the Fire Fighter Cadet volunteer program; details will be provided.

Volunteer Start Date: Early May 2026.
