Fire Captain

The City of Mt. Shasta currently has one position at the Fire Department open for either Fire Engineer or Fire Captain. A decision will be made on the final position based on responses and qualifications.The City of Mt. Shasta is accepting applications for the position of Fire Captain. This is a full-time position with an hourly compensation range of $31.81 to $35.11, depending on experience. The current work schedule is a 4/10 shift (four 10-hour days per week), with the potential to transition to a 56-hour work week in the future based on department needs. Benefits include a generous City contribution to a Cafeteria Plan with two health plans to choose from. One plan has no deductible, and the other includes a City funded health savings account. Both can include vision and dental if you choose, and there is also supplemental insurance available. The position also receives a uniform allowance, P.E.R.S. retirement plan (2% at 50 for Classic members or 2.7% at 57 for New members), holiday in-lieu pay, sick leave (3.69 hours/pay period), bereavement leave (40 hours annually), and vacation days, which accrue per pay period at a rate that increases with tenure (up to a maximum of 300 hours). The City also has several employee-funded deferred compensation plans available. Under the direction of the Fire Chief, this position responds to and oversees a variety of emergencies, including medical and fire suppression calls to prevent or minimize the loss of life and property, hazardous materials incidents, and confined space, extrication, and technical rescues. The Fire Captain oversees and participates in fire prevention and inspection activities, equipment and station maintenance, as well as all aspects of fire training. The position also exercises general and direct supervision over assigned firefighters and volunteers, so leadership and communication skills are essential. Candidates must have a high school diploma or GED and at least five years of firefighting experience and training. They must also possess a valid California Class C driver’s license with Firefighter endorsement or a Commercial driver’s license with tank and airbrake endorsements. Additional requirements include a valid First Responder CPR/AED certificate, valid First Responder Haz-Mat certificate, valid ICS 300 certificate, and CSFM, SFT, or IFSAC Firefighter I and II certifications. Candidates must also have SFT Fire Apparatus Operator IA or equivalent and SFT Fire Apparatus Operator IB or equivalent. For further details, please see the Fire Captain job description. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to gain valuable supervisory experience in a small fire department that handles between 1,000 and 1,250 calls per year.
