Fire Captain - PROMOTIONAL ONLY

Description

Under general direction, serves as the officer responsible for command of the activities of an assigned fire company; conducts and participates in fire training, fire prevention, public education, station and equipment maintenance activities. Exercises general and direct supervision over assigned staff.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include, but are not be limited to, the following:

  • Oversees and is responsible for the daily safe operation of the fire department including fire stations;
  • Supervises staff in all fire department activities; evaluates the performance of assigned staff and works with assigned staff to correct deficiencies;
  • Responds and acts as a staff specialist in any assigned area of emergency and non-emergency operations related to fire or rescue including determining the appropriate course of action;
  • Instructs and supervises all phases of rescue, firefighting tactics, use of equipment and salvage operations;
  • Assigns and supervises station and equipment maintenance activities;
  • Conducts and documents drills and other training activities;
  • Enforces departmental rules and regulations and policies;
  • Prepares, plans, and conducts training programs;
  • Attends public meetings as a representative of the Fire Department, delivers speeches to provide public education regarding fire prevention;
  • Prepares reports and maintains records;
  • Stands in for a superior officer in their absence or at their direction; and
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Fire Science or related related field is desirable.
  • California Incident Command Certification System training is desirable.

Experience

  • Four years of continuous full-time experience as a firefighter and/or Engineer with the City of Redlands Fire Department.

Licenses And Certificates

  • Possess and maintain current Emergency Medical Technician Certification or California Paramedic License accredited in the ICEMA region;
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid California driver's license with Firefighter Endorsement;
  • Must have successfully completed the Redlands Fire Department Engineer Certification (or hold the position of Fire Engineer) and Captain Certification processes prior to application (Certification must be current); and
  • Must complete the California State Company Officer Certification (CSFM) process within 6 months of appointment date.

Special Requirements

Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, climb, and lift 100 lbs.;
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
  • Exposure to heat, noise, outdoors, vibration, confining work space, chemicals, explosive materials, mechanical hazards, and electrical hazards;
  • Must be willing to wear the required uniform; work on call and respond to emergencies; must be able to work under adverse conditions, such as those inherent in emergency fire fighting situations; must be willing and able to return to work during significant emergencies or events to assist in incident management.
  • Work unusual or long hours, weekends, and holidays.
