Purpose
Performs non-supervisory manual, semi-skilled and skilled work with responsibility to maintain fire hydrants. Assists Maintenance Worker in performing preventive maintenance and repair on Fire Department equipment. Lawn care and maintenance of Fire Department property. Assists Fire Department Administrative Assistant with clerical tasks as needed.
Essential Functions
Perform summer maintenance on fire hydrants by cleaning and painting, inspecting and mapping. Also assist with conducting hydrant flow testing and recording accurate results from the flow tests.
Assist the Maintenance Worker in performing maintenance on Fire Department equipment. Perform maintenance on the fire station as directed. Perform maintenance on the fire station grounds by mowing and trimming grass, spraying weeds, seeding and sodding as necessary. Perform a daily check around the fire station grounds for garbage and debris that needs to be cleaned up.
Assist the Fire Department Administrative Assistant with any clerical needs that may arise.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
May respond to resident’s questions/ complaints concerning work being done while at a job site.
Performs other related tasks as assigned by Fire Chief or his/her designee.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of practices, procedures, tools and equipment and materials used in the maintenance of fire equipment and ground maintenance.
Knowledge of OSHA rules and standards and apply them to daily tasks.
Knowledge of City Safety Policies and Procedures and ability to apply them to daily tasks.
Ability to work independently and as a team member without constant direct supervision.
Ability to develop cooperative relations with the public.
Ability to use a computer.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must possess a class D driver’s License
Working Conditions
Majority of the time is spent outdoors performing assigned duties and some time indoors. Regularly uses fine motor skills to coordinate eyes, hands and feet for the operation of a variety of fire department tools, machines or equipment. Regularly uses large motor skills to exert moderate to considerable physical effect while performing a variety of movements such as bending, crouching, pushing/pulling, twisting/turning, digging and lifting. All vision abilities and senses, with the exception of taste, may be used depending on the particular task. Exposure to irritants/fumes, temperature extremes, vibrations, dust, smoke and noise can be occasional to frequent. Must be able to work in traffic situations.
