Fire Driver/Operator

Annual Salary Range: $50,387.86 - 75,581.80

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Fire Equipment Operator is responsible for the protection of life and property by combating, extinguishing and preventing fires. Work includes the operation of fire pumping apparatus at the scene of emergencies. Also employees are responsible for maintaining, inspecting and cleaning department vehicles and other associated equipment. Standards and procedures are established, however, independent judgment is required of the employee during emergency incidents. Duties occasionally involve strenuous exertion under hazardous conditions of extreme heat, smoke and confined spaces. Although assignments are similar to those of the Firefighter/EMT, responsibilities are distinguished by the requirement of advanced fire service knowledge and skills acquired through on-the-job and in-service training. Work is directly supervised by Captains/Lieutenants.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
Drives and operates fire apparatus in response to fire alarms with a fire company; connects hose to nozzles, hydrants and pumps; joins and places hose section; enters burning buildings with hose lines, operate nozzles to play a stream of water on fires, use hand tools and handle fire extinguishers, raise, lower and climb ladders, ventilate burning buildings to remove smoke and fire gases.
Responds to emergency medical calls; provides basic life support treatment for persons if required; extricates trapped victims from wreckage; clean and maintain rescue vehicles and equipment; checks medical supplies for proper stock levels; checks medical equipment for proper functioning; and prepares daily activity report and related reports.
Properly maintain the fire station, fire apparatus, firefighting equipment, buildings and grounds.
Perform salvage operations such as placing salvage covers, sweeping water, removing debris and placing smoke ejectors.
Respond to the directive of the on-shift supervisor.
Attend training sessions in such subjects as firefighting techniques, equipment, first aid, street layout and hydrant location.
Participate in drills and study programs when not in firefighting or rescue activities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the operation, mechanics, and driving characteristics of fire apparatus. General knowledge of firefighting techniques, procedures and mechanics as applied to fire suppression, general knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; thorough knowledge of the principles of hydraulics as applied to fire suppression; thorough knowledge of the street systems, major buildings and physical layout of the Town and fire district; thorough knowledge of the operation and general maintenance of fire fighting equipment and apparatus and the ability to operate such equipment and apparatus safely and effectively; ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, volunteers and the public; ability to keep basic records and prepare reports.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of high school and considerable experience in fire fighting supplemented by specialized training in fire pumping apparatus operations as prescribed by the State of North Carolina is required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid N.C. Class B driver’s license with an excellent driving record.
Possession of N.C. Driver/Operator certification.
Possession of N.C. Firefighter Level ll certification.
Possession of a N.C. EMT certification.
Meet established specific physical, mental, character, and other entrance requirements
Exhibit mechanical aptitude, physical endurance and agility.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to perform all requirements of the National Fire Protection Association's Standard 1001 for firefighting and rescue. Possess the ability to push, pull or drag the average weight of an adult human being (150 lbs.) to affect a rescue.
