Fire & EMS Dispatcher-Lateral

The City of Franklin is in the midst of rapid growth and development to include construction of brand-new schools, downtown revitalization and development, and a waterfront beautification project. The Police/Fire & EMS Departments are growing with it!! The selected candidate will work under general supervision of the Lead Dispatcher to perform a variety of communication related functions providing dispatch and other communication support services involving police, fire, emergency medical, and other city public safety responders.

Essential Functions: Receives high volumes of incoming telephone or alarm system calls regarding emergency and non-emergency police and fire service, emergency ambulance service, information, and after-hours calls. Determines response requirements and relative priorities of situations. Uses public safety radio equipment to dispatch police, fire, EMS, and public works in accordance with established procedures. Utilizes computer-aided dispatch system facilities for complaint taking and coordination of public safety incidents; initiates the public safety alerting systems. Monitors various radio frequencies to keep apprised of developing situations. Observes alarm registers and scan maps. Maintains files of information relating to emergency calls. Enters, updates, and retrieves information from teletype networks and computerized data systems. Greets public walk-ins, answers questions, or refers as appropriate. Performs administrative duties.

Compensation & Benefits: Starting hourly pay rate $27.27 + 10% Pension Pick-Up. + competitive benefits package including health, dental, optical and life insurance, and generous paid time off.

Qualifications: Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age. High school diploma or equivalent, or equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Satisfactory background check required. Knowledge of FCC rules and regulations, LEADS computer operations, and public safety radio dispatching procedures preferred.

Selection Process: The selection process will include a qualifications review, valued at 50% percent of the selection score, and an oral interview, valued at 50% of selection score. Qualification Review to include the following:

  • One (1) year full-time experience as a Dispatcher = 70 points
  • Additional full-time service = 2 points per additional year
  • Currently employed as a full-time Dispatcher = 10 points
  • Veteran’s Credit = 5 points
  • Bachelor’s Degree = 5 points
  • Associate’s Degree = 2 points

Minimum acceptable score = 70 points. Maximum score = 100 points. The cumulative score will be certified by the Civil Service Commission who will provide the City with the top ten applicants.

Pay: $27.27 - $28.39 per hour
