Hiring range: $17.42 - $20.04 hourly; $48,032 - $55,237 annuallyOpen until filledJOB SUMMARYThe firefighter performs life and property protection duties including firefighting, rescue, emergency medical aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention duties. Reporting to the Fire Captain, the Firefighter works under general supervision sufficient to assess achievement of key performance indicators. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment of the position. Performs firefighting activities including responding to fire alarms, participates in the control and suppression of fires including search and rescue, forcible entry, ventilation, and salvage work Assist and participates in hazardous materials responsesPerforms first responder activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.Assists and participates in specialized EMS, extrication, and rescue operationsParticipates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical care, hazardous materials, and related subjectsSubstitutes as Fire Engineer when requiredReceives and relays fire calls and alarms; operates radio and other communication equipmentPrepares and submits required reports and records.Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programsResponds to off-duty alarms when requiredPerforms general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; sweeping, mopping and other custodial duties; cares for grounds around station; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipmentAssists in developing plans for special assignments such as emergency preparedness, hazardous communications, training programs, firefighting, and hazardous materialsPresents programs to the community on safety, medical and fire prevention topicsMaintain physical condition as requiredPerforms related tasks as required

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
JOB RELATED PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Work is performed under emergent conditions and involves considerable personal hazards. This work may require exertion in excess of 100 pounds occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently and in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing pulling, lifting and grasping and feeling. Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed instruction for others to accurately, loudly and quickly follow. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, visual inspection involving small defects and or small parts, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, oils and wearing self-contained breathing apparatus. The worker may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment. The Kannapolis fire department works 48 hour shifts but a good proportion of their shift does not involve physical demands or essential tasks of the job. They do require NFPA 1582 physical.
