PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATIONThe purpose of this classification is to perform administrative and supervisory firefighting and emergency response work in directing and coordinating activities of an assigned shift and to maintain the day-to-day operations of a fire station. Employees in this classification assume responsibility for training, instructing and disciplining subordinates; determining proper deployment of equipment in emergency response situations; and ensuring the proper maintenance of apparatus and equipment.*OPEN UNTIL FILLED*

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSThe following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.Drives a command unit, assigned engine, or ladder truck and responds to emergency alarms, determining equipment and personnel to be deployed and providing input into determining the route to be taken by the fire company; assess the nature of the situation, including the nature of fire, occupancy of building, etc.; directs work of firefighters, supervising and participating in the laying of hose lines, placement of ladders, direction of streams of water, ventilation of buildings, rescue of persons and salvage operations; is familiar with incident command procedures.Responds to fire incidents, emergency medical calls, and other related emergency and non-emergency requests; exercises independent judgment in hazardous situations; performs emergency medical services as required.Directs and assists in salvage and overhaul at fire scenes; participates in wash-downs at scenes of accident or spills; may assist law enforcement or other investigators in determining cause of incidents.Directs and assists in the evacuation of persons and property in emergency situations, such as aircraft crashes, fires, floods, and other natural or manmade disasters; may perform rescue of persons involved in hazardous material incidents, trench collapse, water emergencies, high or low angle rope, or automobile accidents.Supervises a company of firefighters; ensures that the routine schedule for the day is followed by all assigned personnel; defines priorities; prepares daily duty roster; evaluates firefighters' performances during emergency response operations; evaluates performance of equipment during emergency response operations; prepares and maintains associated reports for superiors; recommends discipline of assigned personnel as appropriate.Plans, allocates, and monitors time, people, equipment, and other resources for the County to ensure efficient organization and completion of work; provides input for five-year plan; makes recommendations on equipment purchases.Supervises the maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment; inspects assigned emergency response apparatus and equipment to ensure efficient operating condition and readiness; cleans and maintains equipment, as necessary, after completion of emergency response operations; supervises and participates in minor repairs of apparatus and equipment, as appropriate; assists with the rotation, testing, and maintenance of hose located at the station and on apparatus.Assists in conducting inspections of commercial buildings in the jurisdiction for the purpose of assuring compliance with fire codes and for developing pre-fire plans.Ensures the safety of firefighting personnel; performs company fire inspections; inspects buildings for fire safety.Attends and participates in training sessions on such topics as fire suppression techniques, equipment techniques, emergency medical care, hazardous material containment, street layout and building and hydrant location, incident command, management, inspections, leadership training, etc.; participates in ongoing physical training activities.Supervises the preparation and maintenance of activity records, providing pertinent information to departmental personnel on following shift; reviews activity reports from previous shift and confers with personnel, as necessary; organizes and maintains departmental files.Participates in the development and implementation of training programs for fire services personnel; participates in all in-house training; ensures quality standards and compliance with regulations are maintained; reviews and enforces County and departmental policies, procedures, and regulations.Oversees the cleaning and minor maintenance of department buildings and fire station grounds; orders, inventories, and maintains fire station supplies.Performs searches for location, maintenance, and testing of all water supply located in the jurisdiction; supervises the inspection of fire hydrants and calculates required fire flow data and flow testing data.Participates or conducts public education programs; conducts fire safety classes and pre-incident planning; attends meetings.Confers with upper management to keep them informed on key issues and progress toward objectives and to gain their support and approval; makes recommendations to assist management in making needed improvements.Operates a computer, calculator, office equipment, firefighting equipment, emergency rescue equipment, self-contained breathing apparatus, emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, generators, automated external defibrillators, oxygen kit, portable extrication units, positive pressure fan, ladders, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS Coordinates/performs a variety of general maintenance tasks, including cleaning offices, painting structures, washing vehicles, repairing computers, making minor electrical and plumbing repairs, repairing equipment and furniture, changing air conditioning filters, adding toner to copier and facsimile machine, and changing ink cartridges in printers.Performs other related duties as required.
