An employee in this class participates in the operations of fire suppression and incident response personnel and operations. The employee participates in incident response, including emergency medical, operation of fire apparatus, firefighting, technical rescue, hazardous materials response/mitigation, and equipment and facilities maintenance. The employee also participates in incident response and fire suppression training. Work requires that the employee stay abreast of state-of-the-art fire suppression and rescue procedures, techniques, and equipment and requires the employee to incorporate the necessary changes into in-service training. Ability to make effective decisions under pressure is required in all aspects of work, particularly in operating apparatus during fire response. Work is performed under regular supervision of the Fire Captain and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and written reports concerning the quality and effectiveness of work completed. Acts in the role of company officer in the absence of the station Captain including assuming responsibility for the supervision of personnel and completion of assigned tasks.
Graduation from high school supplemented by completion of courses and seminars in fire service and considerable experience in a fire service or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
