The City of Urbana, Ohio is accepting applications for the full-time position of Fire Marshal in the Fire Division. This position reports to the Chief of Fire and offers a starting salary of $*76,421 annually*, commensurate with experience.
The Fire Marshal is responsible for interpreting, updating, and enforcing the applicable fire code and other rules and regulations as referenced in The City of Urbana Charter and Codified Ordinances. Works collaboratively with the Division shifts, City Engineer’s office, and building department to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of the community. Performs all functions in a professional and customer-friendly manner. Key responsibilities include:
- Coordinates with building department, engineer’s office, and code enforcement for fire related code review and compliance and approval of occupancy permits.
- Inspection for fire code compliance of existing, remodeling, and new construction. Communicates in detail with property/homeowners regarding violation(s), stating the exact nature of such violation(s) and the manner in which it/they be corrected, pursuant to city procedure.
- Completes inspection and compliance of all fire suppression systems under the division’s jurisdiction.
- Works with local and State officials on underground storage tanks requirements and compliance.
- Manages and supervises general office operations, overseeing fire code complaints, violations, and communications (including appropriate follow-up); works with City Prosecutor to insure timely and appropriate legal processing, if needed.
- Completes and/or assists with investigation of fires as required.
- Provides public education in fire prevention.
- Maintain permanent and current records, as they apply to the Ohio Sunshine Law and Records Retention policies; respond to and record all public records requests.
- Recommends and develops proposed fire prevention policies, procedures, and codes.
- Works in cooperation with City Divisions and other governmental entities (e.g., Building Department, Health Department, Engineer’s Office and Police Divisions) and their personnel to ensure compliance of all fire codes and requirements.
- Coordinates with the City’s Technical Review Board for site plan reviews.
- Performs other City duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduation from a high school or GED equivalent
- State of Ohio Certified Level II Fire Fighter
- State of Ohio Certified Emergency Medical Technician or higher
- State of Ohio Certified Fire Safety Inspector
- Two (2) years of increasingly responsible related experience, or any equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
