Summary

  • STATE CERTIFIED PARAMEDICS WILL BE ELIGIBLE FOR $12,500 PARAMEDIC INCENTIVE PAY, ANNUALLY, WHICH IS ADDED TO THE SALARY LISTED ABOVE ($67,351.13 + $12,500 = $79,851.13).


WE WILL ACCEPT YOUR APPLICATION IF YOU ARE ON THE LAST SEMESTER/TRIMESTER OF PARAMEDIC SCHOOL. PLEASE PROVIDE PROOF THAT YOU ARE ENROLLED IN THE LAST SEMESTER/TRIMESTER. HOWEVER, YOU MUST PASS THE STATE OF FLORIDA PARAMEDIC EXAM BEFORE YOUR START DATE TO BE HIRED AS A FIRE MEDIC AND ELIGIBLE FOR THE PARAMEDIC INCENTIVE PAY LISTED ABOVE.


Performs general firefighting, fire prevention and emergency medical duties for the residents and visitors of the City.

Essential Function Duties and Responsibilities

  • Engages in firefighting duties
  • Responds to fire and emergency alarms and requests for assistance
  • Performs routine firefighting duties and maintenance work on fire apparatus, vehicles and at fire station
  • Provides basic and advanced life support medical care
  • Engages in fire prevention work
  • Participates in departmental classes, meetings, drills and training, as required
  • Operates a variety of equipment including firefighting equipment, extrication equipment, hand and power tools
  • Drives and operates fire apparatus
  • Participates in public education
  • Complies with established policies, procedures, and Standard Operating Guidelines for efficient and effective fire department operations
  • Maintains personal and communal fire house living space
  • Performs any other related work as required

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:
May assist with fire station improvements

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of Florida Firefighter Minimum Standards
  • Certification as State of Florida Paramedic
  • Valid State of Florida Driver's License with a good driving record
  • Must possess and maintain State of Florida Certification for Firefighter and Paramedic
  • Proof of successful completion of the IAFF/IAFC Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) within the last six (6) months
  • All required certifications listed above and any other certifications, which may be required by the State of Florida or the City of Palm Beach Gardens maintained throughout term of employment to retain this classification
  • All new hires shall comply with Florida State Statute 633.34(6) regarding tobacco products and during their term of employment shall remain tobacco free
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States
  • Must be able to meet Departmental physical standards
  • Required to meet all the requirements in the Florida State Statute Number 633.34, "Firefighter; Qualifications for employment"

**The City will schedule you for the swim test if you meet all the requirements as well as submitting all the required documentation.


  • Swim 100 yards continuously
  • Tread water for 2 minutes
  • Complete a timed event within 50 seconds
    • Swim 20 yards
    • Submerge to a depth of 4 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object
    • Return to surface
    • Walk or swim 20 yards on your back to return to starting point with both hands holding object
    • Exit water without using steps or ladder


***if you pass all the swim test, you will be scheduled for
a quick video interview (virtual, not in person) on Microsoft Teams, which will last about 2 minutes.


Eligibility: Coverage in the City’s group insurance plans begins the first of the month following thirty (30) days of employment.

Health Insurance: Choice of three (3) plans provided through Florida Blue. Employee contributions are required toward the cost of this insurance on a semi-monthly basis as follows:

On-Site Employee Health and Wellness Center: Available for use by employees, spouses and dependents enrolled on the City’s Health Plan. No-copays for doctor’s visits, labs, physicals, or prescription drugs dispensed at the Center.


Dental Insurance: PPO plan offered through Humana, provided at no cost


Life Insurance: Two (2) times annual salary up to a maximum of $100,000 provided at no cost.

Short Term Disability: Eligible for 60% of salary up to 26 weeks, provided at no cost.

Voluntary Long-Term Disability: 60% of salary up to $1,500 monthly, cost age based.

Employee Assistance Program: Six (6) visits per calendar year, per issue, provided at no cost.

Tutition Reumbursement - Police: $2,500/year from the Police Foundation

Wellness Program: Voluntary wellness initiatives that promote and reward health awareness.

Pension Plan: Certified law enforcement officers and firefighters are Pension Fund participants. Amount of retirement benefits is based on credited service and average final compensation.

Holidays: Eleven (11) days per calendar year. One (1) Floating Holiday per calendar year.

Personal Leave: Accrued monthly used for vacation, illness, or personal days.
Monthly accrual: Police (16) hours; Firefighters (15.4) hours
Personal Leave is tiered based on years of service and increases overtime.
