Rockingham County invites you to consider continuing your life in community service as a Fire & Rescue service professional.

We provide multiple paths for growth and development. We pay you during training to attend our Fire Academy and achieve your EMT, Firefighter I, II and HazMat (hazardous materials) certifications. Your pay increases after training is complete and there is increased earning potential with the achievement of additional certifications and progression steps.

Our Fire & Rescue Recruits learn to:

  • Respond effectively and quickly to fire emergencies by using appropriate fire control and extinguishing techniques; assessing structural factors; using, repairing, and maintaining equipment; assessing other factors of chemical, electrical or hazardous nature; and locating, dealing with, and removing injured persons
  • Provide emergency medical services to individuals by conducting an accurate initial assessment of physical condition and complications; performing appropriate triage in mass casualty situations; selecting and using proper equipment; implanting appropriate medical techniques, i.e., injections, CPR and first aid; and determining when and who to call for assistance
  • Maintain emergency apparatus and equipment by using check sheets weekly and making minor repairs or corrections as needed
  • Maintain Fire & Rescue station buildings in assignment area by performing general housekeeping and making minor repairs when needed
  • Perform the duties of a Fire Fighter I classification, to include developing and updating fire-pre-plans and detailed reports of such plans to be used for suppression services
  • Perform the duties of HAZMAT-First Responder-Operations

**Must be able to pass the Firefighter physical exam**

Employment Status: Full-Time
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
Experience Required: No experience required; Regional Firefighter Testing Certificate required
Minimum Education Requirements: High School Diploma/GED
Direct Supervisor: Station Commander/Lieutenant
Primary Work Location: Fire & Rescue Stations
Physical requirements: This is operative work requiring the exertion of up to and exceeding 100 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; must be able to pass required firefighter physical.
Certification: Driver’s License; CPR, HAZMAT, EMT, Firefighter 1 & 2, and EVOC must be successfully completed through provided training within specified timeframe if not already certified.
