Job Title
NICET III Fire Sprinkler Designer
Location: [Jefferson City, MO] — [Onsite/Remote with periodic site travel]
Department: Fire Protection / Life Safety
Reports To: [Design Manager / Project Manager]
Employment Type: [Full-time]
About the Role
We’re hiring a NICET III–certified sprinkler designer to take ownership of code-compliant water-based fire protection designs from survey through as-builts. You’ll coordinate with project management, fabrication, field crews, and AHJs to produce accurate layouts, perform hydraulic calculations, and deliver permit and installation packages on time and on budget.
What You’ll Do
- Design & Drafting
- Develop code-compliant sprinkler system layouts (wet, dry, pre-action, as applicable) in AutoCAD/Revit with detailed plans, section views, riser details, hangers/seismic bracing, and valve schedules.
- Prepare complete shop/permit drawings, submittals, and as-builts; coordinate PE seals where required.
- Hydraulic Calculations & Engineering Support
- Perform and document hydraulic calculations; size mains/branches; analyze water supplies and fire pump/standpipe demands.
- Specify components to applicable listings/approvals (UL/FM) and project standards.
- Codes, Standards & Compliance
- Apply NFPA 13/14/20 and relevant I-Codes; incorporate jurisdictional amendments and owner insurance requirements (e.g., FM Global).
- Lead coordination with AHJs—respond to review comments and manage revisions to approval.
- BIM & Coordination
- Participate in BIM coordination and clash detection with MEP/structural trades; issue RFIs, track changes, and maintain the model.
- Field & Fabrication Interface
- Conduct site surveys and field verifications; generate material lists, spools, and fabrication packets; support field installation and commissioning.
- Project Execution
- Maintain drawing logs, revision control, and design schedules; forecast design hours, support change orders, and contribute to project closeout.
Required Qualifications
- NICET Level III in Water-Based Systems Layout (active and in good standing).
- 5+ years of sprinkler design experience delivering commercial/industrial/healthcare or storage projects.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD (advanced) and working knowledge of Revit or willingness to upskill quickly.
- Hands-on experience with hydraulic calc tools (e.g., HydraCALC/HydraCAD, AutoSPRINK, HASS, or SprinkCAD) and Bluebeam Revu for markups.
- Strong command of NFPA 13/14/20, IBC/IFC basics, and submittal/permit processes; familiarity with local amendments.
- Ability to read architectural/structural drawings, coordinate penetrations/supports, and detail seismic bracing.
- Clear, professional communication with PMs, field teams, clients, and AHJs; strong documentation habits.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to conduct site visits, including occasional ladder/lift access with proper PPE.
Nice-to-Have
- Experience with storage occupancies (ESFR, CMSA, high-piled storage) and pump/standpipe systems.
- Navisworks Manage for clash detection; BIM 360/Autodesk Construction Cloud workflows.
- Exposure to FM Global Data Sheets and insurance-driven criteria.
- Basic pump selection/sizing and acceptance testing support.
- NICET IV or path toward IV; OSHA-10/30.
Tools You’ll Use
- CAD/BIM: AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks
- Calcs/Design Suites: HydraCAD/HydraCALC, SprinkCAD, AutoSPRINK, HASS
- Collaboration: Bluebeam Revu, BIM 360/ACC, Microsoft 365
Key Results (How We’ll Measure Success)
- First 30–60 days: Produce permit-ready drawings for at least [3-4] active projects with minimal rework; close out [75]% of AHJ comments on first review.
- By 6 months: Maintain on-time submittals ≥ 95%, average rework < 5% of design hours, and pass AHJ first-pass approvals ≥ 80%.
- Ongoing: Positive feedback from field on constructability; accurate and timely material lists/spool sheets.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Office and field environments; ability to perform site surveys, take dimensions, and verify existing conditions.
- Lift/carry up to ~25 lbs occasionally; climb ladders; navigate active construction sites with PPE.
Education & Credentials
- High school diploma or equivalent required; AS/BS in engineering technology or related field preferred.
- NICET III (Water-Based Systems Layout) required; continued education to maintain certification.
Compensation & Benefits
