The Stevens Point Fire Department is now accepting applications for Firefighter / Paramedic candidates. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies. The purpose of this position is to respond to emergencies and perform suppression activities, rescue work, hazardous materials response, and advanced life-support emergency medical services.
Lateral Firefighter/Paramedic transfers may be considered and placed at the appropriate step level dependent upon qualifications, years of service, and approval by the Police and Fire Commission. Applicants that have Firefighter I and NR-EMT basics are encouraged to apply.

Firefighters are appointed by the Chief from the eligibility list established by the Police and Fire Commission. New recruits shall serve a 12-24 month probationary period with the reservation that at any time during the 12-24 month probationary period, they may be removed from the Department.
New hires will be required to be Nationally Registered Paramedics within 1 year of date of hire. New hires must then remain qualified and active as Nationally Registered Paramedics or be terminated.
Minimum Qualifications:
The employee will be required to do heavy work for varying lengths or time. He/she will be expected to do heavy lifting, pulling, climbing, and running. The employee will respond to emergency situations and must respond at a moment’s notice. The employee will be expected to make a transition from a full sleep state to a high work/stress state. The employee will encounter life-threatening situations that will put him/her under extreme stress. He/she will be driving emergency vehicles. The employee is required to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (respirators).
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands, to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb, or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk or hear, and taste or smell.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in all outside weather conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places, and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditional, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMS activities when noise levels may be loud.
