FIREFIGHTER

Description

The base annual wage is generated from a base hourly rate of $16.66 per hour under the standard shift schedule of 48 hours worked and 96 hours off. Base salary does not include built in overtime which is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 106 hours in a 14 day pay cycle. Additional overtime opportunities for shift coverage may be available per departmental policy. These opportunities would provide pay in excess of the base annual wage.

The purpose of the class is to perform general firefighting work, to respond to calls for emergency service and to perform related work as required. This position consists of technical work in the prevention, control, and suppression of structural and non-structural fires; responds to fire and rescue calls; suppresses fires; renders emergency medical assistance while on-scene; and operates fire rescue equipment. This class reports to the Fire Captain of their station and functions on a shift working 48 hours on and 96 hours off. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

Duties

Essential Job Functions

Coordinates and participates in the work of an assigned fire station.

Responds to fire/emergency medical and non-emergency calls

Performs firefighting and fire suppression activities.

Administers emergency first aid.

Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in firefighting techniques.

Adheres to station policies and procedures; ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations.

Assists with pre-fire planning, prevention, and apparatus checks.

Performs duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.

Utilizes all fire suppression equipment, hand, and power tools

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Fire Chief, other fire departments, other emergency response agencies, law enforcement agencies, co-workers, volunteers, and the public.

Maintains cleanliness of station

Keeps physically fit.

Qualifications

Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or GED.

Prefer at least one (1) year of related work experience.

Required Special Qualifications

Must possess a valid South Carolina driver’s license.

International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter I

Hazmat Awareness

National Incident Management System (NIMS-ICS) 100, 200, 700, 800

First Aid/CPR/AED

Must Obtain With In One (1) Year Of Hire

Hazardous Materials Operations

IFSAC Firefighter II

South Carolina Fire Academy (SCFA) Rapid Intervention Team or equivalent

SCFA Rescuing the Rescuer or equivalent

Emergency Medical Responder

SCFA Emergency Vehicle Driver Training

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed dealing with crisis situations that require making major decisions involving people, resources, and property.

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position; typical shift works 48 hours on and 96 hours off . Works weekends and holidays. Must work 48 hour each week to maintain full-time status. Employees must be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays during emergencies or as requested. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.
