SUMMARY OF DUTIES
Under the supervision of the Fire Chief, a Firefighter is responsible for responding to various emergency situations, including, but not limited to, structure fires, alarms, vehicle rescue, QRS medical, and other emergency situations. Firefighters operate and maintain apparatus, including a pumper, quint aerial, and support vehicles. Various other duties will include fire prevention, community outreach, and code enforcement.

Staff – No Direct Reports; Volunteers – When Applicable
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responds as an interior certified firefighter for suppression firefighting, and all other ancillary fire incident duties.
- Engage in fire prevention activities, including routine commercial fire inspections and fire and life safety presentations.
- Maintain all fire apparatus and department equipment.
- Work with and train with members of the Dormont Fire Department.
- Ability to work independently in all situations, regardless of time of day or weather conditions.
- Respond to medical calls in support of the local ambulance service to provide first aid, and/or basic life support.
- Ability to utilize resources to visually identify hazardous materials placards and shipping documents to determine appropriate response.
- Perform other assigned essential duties.
REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- High school diploma, or equivalent.
Certifications and Training
- A minimum of three (3) years of fire suppression experience.
- IFSAC or Pro Board Firefighter 1 (Firefighter 2 is preferred).
- Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC) or Emergency Vehicle Driver’s Training (EVDT).
- Experience operating a pumper and/or quint is preferred.
- Hazardous Materials Operations certification, or the ability to obtain within one (1) year.
- Ability to obtain National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) within one (1) year of hire (current NREMT or PA Dept. of Health EMT-B, or EMR preferred).
- ICS-100 & 200, NIMS IS-700 & IS-800.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- U.S. citizen and twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of application.
- Valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain a PA Class B commercial driver’s license, including airbrake endorsement, within six (6) months of hire. A CDL permit is required by the start date.
- Must reside within five (5) miles of the Dormont Fire Department, located at 1455 Hillsdale Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15216, by the end of the second year of employment.
TESTING / CIVIL SERVICE LIST DETERMINATION
- Civil Service written exam, passing score of 70%.
- Physical agility test administered by the Dormont Fire Department (pass/fail).
- Oral interview.
- Initial offer, based on Civil Service Eligibility List, Rules, and Regulations.
- Post offer background check, psychological exam, medical exam, and drug screening.
