Employment Opportunity
Performs a variety of fire suppression, rescue, emergency medical and prevention duties that require the use of body strength to overcome obstacles, obstructions, barriers and other adverse conditions. While wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and full turnout gear, performs fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical duties in confined spaces, at heights, in hazardous material, and in fire and smoke-filled environments. Operates an emergency vehicle during both day and night, in emergency situations involving speeds in excess of posted limits, in congested traffic and in unsafe road conditions caused by factors such as fog, rain, ice and snow. Conducts fire inspections, assists the public with questions and concerns and performs general maintenance on fire apparatus, vehicles, equipment and facilities. Communicates effectively with all types and ages of people. May make oral presentations to various audiences. Prepares reports using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. Communicates effectively over emergency radio channels while initiating and responding to radio communications. Frequently lifts equipment and patients. Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters to include fighting fires, administering emergency medical aid, lifting, dragging and carrying people away from dangerous situations and securing and evacuating people from particular areas. Performs duties that include bending, stooping, climbing, crawling, pushing, pulling, running and walking. Deals effectively with people in situations that may, at times, become confrontational, stressful or uncomfortable. Deals with situations or conditions that may be psychologically traumatic. Manages numerous tasks and assignments at a time with frequent interruptions, including maintaining a clean and organized environment within and around the station. Works days and hours assigned and begins and ends work on time. Shift work is required. May be required to work with different individuals by being transferred from shift to shift to accommodate work schedules. Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
MUST PROVIDE: A current resume along with proof of current certification for: Fire I, Fire II, HazMat Operations, and Paramedic to be eligible for consideration.Considerable knowledge of firefighting practices and procedures, fire hazards, safety precautions, fire hydraulics, building construction and mechanics. Must have Utah Firefighter II certification and be certified as a Utah paramedic.Considerable knowledge of hazardous materials and technical rescue. Ability to climb ladders, work at considerable heights, in confined spaces or sight obscured environments, and to perform limited mechanical work. Considerable knowledge of City geography, and department policy, procedures, rules and regulations. Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine the proper course of action under emergency conditions. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to prepare written reports using proper grammar and spelling. Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public. Ability to meet the physical requirements established by the department. Maintains the proper Utah Driver's License required for the position. Will observe all traffic regulations, follow City policy and be a safe, courteous and responsible driver while operating City vehicles. Must wear seat belts and make certain that other passengers are in seatbelts when the vehicle is in operation. Graduation from high school or its equivalent.
