Firefighter (Uncertified)

Protects life and property by performing emergency aid duties, firefighting, and hazardous materials as well as fire prevention duties; drives the rescue, maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities.


Essential Job Functions:


  • Performs firefighting activities including laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  • Performs emergency aid activities including administering first aid and providing other assistance as required.
  • Participates in fire drills, attends classes in firefighting, emergency medical, hazardous materials, and related subjects.
  • Receives and relays fire calls and alarms. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  • Participates in the inspection of buildings, hydrants, and other structures in fire prevention programs.
  • Maintains fire equipment, apparatus, and facilities. Performs minor repairs to departmental equipment.
  • Performs general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities and equipment; cleans and washes walls and floors; cares for grounds around station; makes minor repairs; washes, hangs and dries hose; washes, cleans, polishes, maintains and tests apparatus and equipment.
  • Performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers, sweeping water, and removing debris.
  • Perfforms other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Completion of a recognized fire recruit training academy.
  • All fire department employees must complete all probationary requirements by the end of their first year of employment. The individual must meet the objectives listed in the probationary handbook (including equipment: familiarization, firefighter competencies, territory familiarization, dispatch familiarization, physical ability testing, and testing over our standards and our policies).

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid State driver’s license.
  • State of Georgia Fire Certificate or National Professional Qualifications (NPQ) Certified Firefighter 1
  • FF1 Curriculum Test
  • Emergency Medical Technician
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Special Requirements:

Must be at least 18 years of age; pass a criminal history and background check; must be able to meet all entry level special requirements; pass a written and oral exam; pass a medical exam and the department’s physical agility test; demonstrate working knowledge of territory and department standard operating procedures; and pass a standard probationary period.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of fire suppression and prevention principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of first aid and resuscitation techniques and their application.
  • Skill in operating emergency medical aid unit, fire apparatus, hoses, and other standard firefighting equipment, ladders, first aid equipment, radio, pager, personal computer, and phone.
  • Ability to perform strenuous or peak physical efforts during emergency or training activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold, or smoke.
  • Skill in communicating, both verbally and in writing.Ability to apply standard firefighting and emergency aid techniques to specific situations.Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public.

Physical Demands:

The work is very heavy work and requires exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.


Work Environment:

Work is performed regularly outdoors. Outdoor settings can involve exposure to extreme temperatures; a variety of weather conditions; contaminated surroundings; noise; contagious diseases; moving mechanical parts; high and or precarious places; cramped surroundings, poor lighting/limited visibility; possible structural instability; electrical hazards; vibrations; poor air quality; falling objects; and various atmospheric conditions (smoke, fumes, odors, gases, alarms, dirt, dust, water, toxic and noxious chemicals, solvents, oils, and airborne particles). In situations of emergencies, work may involve exposure to chaotic situations, traffic, and handling tragic situations involving injuries, death, and emotionally charged reactions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain firefighting or EMT activities when noise levels may be loud.
