We are seeking a dedicated and energetic Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) to join our Department. Chartered in 1886, the South Boston Fire Department staffs three Engines, an EMS QRV, a Medium Rescue, a Brush Truck, and the Halifax County Tower Ladder as well a several support vehicles. The Department runs between 2600 and 3000 calls annually within the Town of South Boston and Halifax County. In this role, you will be at the forefront of providing fire suppression, vehicle and technical rescue, immediate medical care, ensuring safety, and supporting other emergency responders during critical situations. Your quick thinking, compassionate approach, and technical skills will help save lives and deliver essential care in high-pressure environments. $2000 sign on bonus.

MUST BE CERTIFIED IN VIRGINIA AS NFPA 1001 FIREFIGHTER I (minimum) AND A VIRGINIA EMT-BASIC OR HIGHER TO APPLY.

<Duties>

  • Respond promptly to fires, alarms, vehicle accidents, and medical calls.
  • 24 on/48 off shift rotation after orientation period.
  • Provide basic life support (BLS), including CPR, first aid, and vital signs monitoring to stabilize patients before transport.
  • Operate emergency vehicles safely and efficiently, adhering to all traffic laws and safety protocols.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient conditions, treatments administered, and fire incident details in compliance with protocols.
  • Communicate clearly with dispatchers, other healthcare providers, the community, and other emergency personnel to coordinate effective response efforts.
  • Conduct routine checks of fire and medical equipment and supplies to ensure readiness for emergencies.
  • Demonstrate mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting basic vehicle or equipment issues when required.

<Skills>

  • Certification as Virginia EMT-Basic or higher, and CPR from recognized authorities.
  • Virginia Firefighter I certification minimum.
  • Valid Virginia EVOC III.
  • Mechanical aptitude for maintaining and troubleshooting firefighting, medical, or vehicle equipment.
  • Ability to perform heavy lifting safely and efficiently.
  • Competence in taking vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, respiration rate, and oxygen saturation levels.
  • Certification or competence in operating firefighting apparatus pumps and aerial apparatus.
  • Excellent communication skills for clear reporting and coordination under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,230.00 per year
