JOB
This is a responsible and skilled position which requires the incumbent to perform specialized work as an individual and/or team member in Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, Fire Loss Management and other diversified emergency activities. Work primarily involves protection of life and property, and frequently involves prolonged strenuous exertion under extreme hazardous and/or dangerous conditions such as, but not limited to, fire, smoke, noise, extreme heat or cold, heights, cramped spaces, toxic or irritant gases or chemicals, explosive situations, water rescue, and adverse weather elements. Work is performed in accordance with well-established and defined procedures. Assignments are received from department supervisors in fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire loss management and other diversified emergency activities.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operates specialized equipment and participates in fire suppression and emergency medical operations and related diversified emergency activities.Performs equipment maintenance, housekeeping, and other related duties including, but not limited to buildings and grounds. Cleans and inspects equipment after returning from a fire. Performs routine maintenance tasks on equipment and facilities on an as needed basis.Participates in daily training classes, drills, and activities, and daily equipment checks.Administers blood pressure checks to citizens.Participates in mandatory physical training program and evaluation as prescribed by the Department physician in order to maintain required state of physical condition as prescribed by Fire Department policies, utilizing Fire Department physical training program.Performs other duties similar in nature to the above as assigned.KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS: Has sufficient general knowledge of the operating characteristics and service requirements of equipment and apparatus used in firefighting, fire prevention, patient care, rescue operations and hazardous material response.Has sufficient knowledge of the hazards involved in emergency response operations and of the applicable safety precautions.Has sufficient knowledge of basic emergency medical procedures and extrications techniques.Has sufficient knowledge of street layout, subdivisions, buildings, block numbers and the location of fire hydrants in the City.Has sufficient knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, standard operating procedures, rules and regulations and safety and health policies and
procedures.Is able to operate and care for assigned emergency response apparatus and
equipment.Is able to exercise initiative in meeting and resolving emergency
situations.Is able to analyze situations quickly and correctly and adopt effective courses of action with regard to surrounding and
circumstances.Is able to develop and maintain routine activity
reports.Is able to effectively communicate orally and in
writing.Is able to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Possession of a valid Florida Class E Driver license with acceptable driving record.Will be required to obtain State of Florida Paramedic Certification within four (4) years of hire date and maintain this certificate as a condition of continued employment.During occasions of local emergencies this position may be required to report to perform emergency tasks, which may result in extended work hours as well as extended periods of time away from family members. The Incident Commander and the employee's department Head will make the determination as to who will be required to work.This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current Drugs and Alcohol policy.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Must be physically able to operate a variety of fire and emergency medical related apparatus and equipment, including such firefighting and emergency response equipment as pumps, ladders, aerial ladders, air compressors, self-contained breathing apparatus, extrication equipment ("jaws of life"), hand tools, electric tools, hydraulic tools, pneumatic tools, axes, shovels, two-way radios, etc.Has physical strength and agility to perform prolonged and arduous work under adverse conditions when required.Requires ability to ascend and descend ladders, stairs and ramps using feet or hands and arms.Requires ability to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, bending, stooping or crouching.Must be able to meet physical qualifications of NFPA 1582.Must have CPAT certification or obtain one within the first six (6) months of date of hire.This job description is not intended to be and should not be construed as an all-inclusive list of all the responsibilities, skills or working conditions associated with the position.
