Job Description:
The Ashford Volunteer Fire Department, Inc., is seeking candidates for a full-time position as a Firefighter/EMT. The individual prepares for, responds to and performs required functions at emergency fire, ambulance, rescue and service calls and performs such other fire service duties as defined in the General Statutes as a Firefighter/EMT. The individual performs general maintenance work and upkeep of the fire department buildings, grounds, vehicles, equipment and alarm systems, including appropriate record keeping.

Role and Responsibilities:
- Responds to medical emergencies; evaluates medical condition of the patient, provides appropriate treatment and/or critical interventions appropriate to patient's condition. Communicates with area hospitals for guidance; transports patient(s) to appropriate hospital.

-Responds to rescue, fire, hazardous materials, and related incidents. Performs various complex tasks during life threatening situations, both as a member of a team and independently, to resolve the incident.

-Drives and Operates, ambulances, fire apparatus and service vehicles. When operating a pumper, applies proper hydraulic principles so as to maintain suitable water pressure in hose lines, standpipes, and sprinkler systems

-Evaluates nature and severity of emergency incidents and selects appropriate tools and techniques. Operates whatever manual or power tools or equipment that are necessary to control/resolve an emergency condition.

-Documents emergency incidents and patient care reports on appropriate forms. Completes and maintains reports, records, and journals.

-Performs daily maintenance check of all types of EMS/Rescue/Fire apparatus and related equipment. Examines apparatus and equipment to ensure adequate levels of fuel, oil, coolant, water, foam, and chemicals. Performs operational checks of apparatus, and equipment, both manual and power, to ensure readiness for emergency use.

-Performs daily check of emergency service and personal safety equipment; ensures emergency response vehicles are stocked with necessary equipment and supplies and in their proper position and ready for instant use. Ensures personal safety equipment is in good condition and ready for donning.

-Monitors and answers telephone calls, radio transmissions, and alarms connected or installed at the fire station. Effectively communicates the nature, extent, and progress of emergency incidents to all responders and dispatch personnel.

-Performs related work as required.

Requirements:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid CT driver's license with a Q Endorsement or CT CDL B
- Current valid certification as a State of Connecticut Firefighter I or higher (Firefighter II preferred)

- Current valid certification as an EMT-Basic or higher

- At least two years of experience in Fire and Rescue, at least one year of EMS experience in the back of an ambulance

- Knowledge of mechanical systems and equipment used in firefighting operations

- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks, including heavy lifting (50lbs +), carrying equipment, working on slippery and/or hazardous surfaces, and working for long periods of time requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration

- Proficiency in CPR, first aid, and basic life support techniques

- Strong communication skills and the ability to work well within a team
