The Firefighter/Paramedic performs skilled public safety work involving fire suppression, advanced life support emergency medical services, rescue operations, hazardous materials response, fire prevention, and community risk reduction. The position protects life and property through rapid, professional emergency response and delivery of advanced medical care in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Guidelines, City medical protocols, and applicable law.

Essential Job Functions
Emergency Response & Fire Suppression
- Responds to fire, rescue, hazardous materials, and other emergency calls within the City and mutual aid jurisdictions.
- Performs fire suppression activities including hose deployment, ladder operations, ventilation, search and rescue, salvage, and overhaul.
- Operates fire apparatus, ambulances, pumps, and related equipment safely and effectively.
- Assists with fire scene investigation support and evidence preservation when assigned.
Emergency Medical Services
- Provides Advanced Life Support (ALS) care as a licensed Paramedic in accordance with approved medical protocols.
- Maintains required certifications and competencies in advanced life support procedures.
- Completes patient care documentation accurately and maintains patient confidentiality in compliance with federal and state privacy laws.
- Inspects, cleans, restocks, and maintains ambulances, medications, and medical equipment to ensure readiness.
Prevention, Training & Community Engagement
- Participates in required drills, continuing education, and certification maintenance.
- Assists with fire prevention inspections, hydrant testing, and life safety system evaluations as assigned.
- Participates in public education programs and community outreach initiatives.
- May assist in training or supervising personnel when assigned.
Equipment & Administrative Responsibilities
- Inspects, cleans, tests, and maintains apparatus, tools, equipment, and station facilities.
- Completes required reports and maintains accurate operational records.
- Serves in acting or relief capacity for officers when assigned.
- Performs related duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be 21 years of age prior to start date.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Certified Firefighter (NFPA 1001) through St. Louis County Fire Standards Commission or ability to obtain within required timeframe.
- Current Missouri Licensed Paramedic (EMT-P) or approved equivalent.
- Current ACLS, BLS, PALS, and PHTLS certifications or equivalent.
- Ability to pass medical, physical agility, and psychological examinations consistent with NFPA 1582.
- Ability to maintain required physical fitness standards and certifications as a condition of continued employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of modern firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials response, and advanced emergency medical practices.
- Ability to operate fire apparatus, ambulances, pumps, ladders, hydraulic tools, and advanced medical equipment safely and effectively.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work under hazardous and high-stress conditions.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and remain calm in emergency situations.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, healthcare providers, partner agencies, and the public.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with fire and EMS operations.
Physical Requirements
This position requires heavy physical work, including lifting and moving objects in excess of 100 pounds with assistance, climbing, crawling, stooping, pulling, carrying, and operating equipment under emergency conditions. The position requires visual acuity, hearing ability, and effective verbal communication.
Work Environment
Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments and includes exposure to extreme temperatures, smoke, toxic substances, hazardous materials, noise, and other dangerous conditions. Employees are required to wear personal protective equipment and may encounter unpredictable and potentially life-threatening situations.
