Firefighter/Paramedic

Overview
Join our dedicated emergency response team as a Firefighter/Paramedic, where your energy and commitment will make a vital difference in saving lives and protecting communities. Under the general supervision of a Fire Captain, fights fires, mitigates hazardous materials emergencies and staffs ambulances in the protection of life and property; participates in fire prevention activities and fire company inspections; operates and maintains fire apparatus, fire pumps, firefighting/rescue equipment and ambulances; supervises ambulance operations while on emergency calls; and performs other duties as assigned. Examples of Duties

Rescues persons endangered by fire or other hazards.
Provides treatment for victims at the scene of an emergency and during transport to a hospital via ground and/or air ambulance.
Renders advanced and basic life support services consistent with Fresno County Emergency Paramedic policies and procedures.
Maintains communication with designated base station hospitals; carries out orders of the emergency room personnel in the administration of drugs, narcotics, medications, intravenous (IV) solutions and related emergency measures in treating life-threatening medical disorders.
Maintains records and make reports concerning emergency medical care procedures.
Participates in required training programs.
Responds to alarms, lays hose lines, holds nozzles to direct stream of water on fires and assists in the operations of engine pumping equipment.
Raises, lowers and climbs ladders; performs roof top ventilation; conducts overhaul, salvage and clean-up operations.
Assists in the mitigation of emergencies involving hazardous materials.
Maintains fire trucks, engines, ambulances and other emergency vehicles.
Operates communication equipment on vehicles and/or in stations.
Answers general questions from the public; assists in community projects and programs.
Cleans stations, quarters and equipment; maintains a clean and orderly condition in and about the fire station and associated grounds.
Studies Fire Department rules and regulations.
Participates in fire hazards, fire prevention inspections and weed abatement duties.
Responds to fire calls and other emergencies during non-duty hours when required.
May serve as acting Fire Engineer on a temporary assignment.
Drives a fire truck, engine or other fire apparatus if qualified.
Sometimes works over-time or irregular hours.
Wears a uniform; maintains a clean and neat appearance.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge of:
The organizational structure of the department; geographical configurations and characteristics of the response districts; department operating procedures for administration, emergency operations, incident management systems; working knowledge of appropriate methods of patient care used within the Paramedic scope of practice. Standard fire fighting operations, procedures, equipment and safety precautions; fire chemistry; federal, state and local agency laws and regulations pertaining to emergency service, fire safety and occupancy loads; safe driving procedures; basic mechanics; English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation; principles and procedures of recordkeeping; and techniques used in dealing with the public.

Skill and Ability to:
Analyze the potential threat to life and property; administer first aid, advanced life support and Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR); use, maintain and service emergency medical equipment, fire apparatus, fire pumps, hoses, ladders and other standard firefighting tools, such as hand tools, saws, radios, pagers and telephones. Learn city streets and addresses. Comply with all applicable traffic laws while maintaining a safe response at speeds appropriate to road, traffic and weather conditions. Understand and follow oral and written directions. Communicate effectively in written and verbal form. Keep accurate and orderly records; complete forms and reports; maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and documents; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, peers, subordinates and the general public.

Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; completion of college level work in Fire Science is highly desirable. Solo field paramedic experience preferred but not required.

Paramedic Certification; must be able to obtain the Fresno County Certification as a Paramedic within 30 days of appointment and maintain Fresno County’s Paramedic certification as a condition of continued employment.

This class is distinguished from the Firefighter/Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) by assignment of some duties and possession of the Paramedic Certification.

Valid California Drivers License, Class C; must be insurable under the City’s insurance policy without the City incurring any additional premiums or costs; must obtain a valid Class B license issued by the California Department of Motor Vehicles prior to completion of probationary period.

Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment; be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien; and pass a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, physical examination with drug test and twelve month probation.

Health:

The City of Coalinga provides health, vision, and dental insurance for City employees at to the employee. The monthly premium is 100% employer-paid. Employees can choose between a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) or Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plan. Employees may also elect to enroll their spouses, registered domestic partners and/or dependents into the health plan, in which the City will pay 63% of the premium.

Employees receive a City-paid $50,000 life insurance policy.

Retirement:

The City of Coalinga offers a CalPERS retirement plan with a formula of 2% at 55 for CalPERS Classic Members and 2% at 57 for New Members hired after January 1, 2013.

Paid Time Off:

Employees accrue 288 hours of vacation and 288 hours of sick leave per year.

Employees shall receive twenty-four (24) hours in a Holiday Leave for all City recognized holidays that are worked. Employees shall be allowed to carry over a maximum of 120 hours of Holiday Leave per fiscal year.

Educational Achievement Compensation. Effective 1/1/19, 1.25% of base rate of pay for AA/AS Degree, and 2.5% of base rate of pay for BA/BS Degree with a maximum of 3.75% in educational achievement compensation.

Longevity Pay of 1.5% of base pay beginning on 10th anniversary, an additional 1.5% of base pay beginning on 15th anniversary, and an additional 1.5% of base pay beginning on 20th anniversary.

Paramedic Liaison Officer Pay of $100 per month.
Paramedic Preceptor Pay of $250 per year.
