Lateral Firefighter Hiring Announcement
Position Summary
The South Spartanburg Fire District is seeking experienced firefighters for lateral hire positions. Under general supervision, personnel respond to fire suppression, rescue, and emergency incidents while exercising sound judgment in high-risk environments. Firefighters operate as part of a team performing fire suppression, rescue, and emergency response functions while maintaining operational readiness.
South Spartanburg Fire District operates engine, squad, and ladder companies, providing personnel the opportunity to work in diverse operational assignments including fire suppression, technical rescue, and hazard mitigation.
This position requires the ability to work effectively under stressful and dangerous conditions, maintain high physical fitness standards, and demonstrate strong teamwork and professionalism.
Pay Scale
(Lateral placement based on qualifications and experience)
Firefighter: $40,809 – Up depending on qualifications and experience
Firefighter II / Relief Driver: $42,665 – Up depending on qualifications and experience
· EMT Certification – $5,000
· Hazardous Materials Technician – $1,000
· Technical Rescue – $1,000
Paid at hourly rate for training classes within the South Spartanburg training Matrix.
Schedule
Personnel work the Portland Schedule structured as:
1 day on / 3 days off / 2 days on / 3 days off
This schedule provides extended recovery time and improved work-life balance while maintaining operational readiness.

Training and Professional Development
South Spartanburg Fire District is committed to developing highly skilled firefighters and provides extensive training opportunities both regionally and nationwide. Members are encouraged to pursue advanced certifications and specialized training in areas such as:
· Technical Rescue
· Hazardous Materials Response
· Specialized Rescue Disciplines
· Advanced Fireground Operations
· Fire Officer Development
The department emphasizes continuous professional development, realistic training, and operational excellence.
Examples of Duties
· Responds to emergency calls and alarms involving fires, rescues, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other emergency situations.
· Operates fire apparatus and other response vehicles, transporting personnel and equipment to emergency scenes.
· Performs fire suppression and rescue operations.
· Search and rescue of victims
· Provide basic life support care until EMS personnel assume patient care.
· Participates in department training and continuing education programs and assists in conducting training sessions when assigned.
· Assists with pre-incident planning activities, documenting building layouts, hazards, and water supply locations.
· Maintains readiness of firefighting equipment by testing, inspecting, cleaning, and servicing apparatus and equipment, including refilling air cylinders, loading hose, and maintaining tools.
· Completes required documentation including incident reports, apparatus maintenance reports, inspection reports, and pre-fire plans.
· Practices safe operational procedures while performing duties in hazardous and rapidly changing emergency environments.
Typical Qualifications
· High School Diploma or GED required.
· Current Firefighter II certification (or ability to obtain through reciprocity) preferred for lateral applicants.
· Current SCFA EVDT & Pump Operations certification preferred
· Current NREMT & SC EMT credential preferred, but must be obtained.
· Valid South Carolina Class E Driver’s License or ability to obtain.
· Ability to operate fire apparatus and a wide variety of firefighting and rescue equipment including hose appliances, ladders, forcible entry tools, and rescue equipment.
· Ability to lift and carry approximately 100 pounds and perform physically demanding tasks in emergency environments.
· Must be physically capable of rapid response and effective performance in dangerous and stressful situations.

· Applicants must successfully complete the South Spartanburg Fire District hiring process, which include:
o Written Exam
o Physical Agility Test
§ Pump Operations Test (relief driver candidates only)
o Interview Panel
· Final candidates must:
o Pass background investigation,
o Pass fit-for-duty medical evaluation, and
o Drug screening prior to employment.
Pay: $40,809.00 - $57,463.91 per year
