Fleet Analyst

Ellingson is hiring a Fleet Analyst to join their growing team. Ellingson is a stable, family values-based company that specializes in underground solutions throughout Southern Minnesota and the entire United States.


The Fleet Analyst is responsible for the capital efficiency and lifecycle strategy of the company’s fleet. This role partners closely with Operations, Finance and Maintenance teams to ensure fleet-related investments are cost-effective, compliant, and aligned with business goals, namely, EBITDA, cash flow, and long-term growth while maintaining operational reliability and safety. The fleet analyst uses data-driven insights to optimize lifecycle costs, improve utilization, and support strategic decision-making related to vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Capital Strategy & Lifecycle Management

  • Develop and maintain the fleet capital plan (1-year, 3-year, and 5-year horizons).
  • Define asset replacement timing based on cost, utilization, risk, and operational need.
  • Evaluate buy / lease / rent decisions using financial modeling and scenario analysis.
  • Manage fleet net book value, residual risk, and disposition strategy.
  • Support long-term fleet planning, including replacement strategies, standardization initiatives, and capital prioritization.
  • Lead and support vendor financial evaluations, including cost comparisons, contract reviews, and total-value assessments.

Financial Management & Analysis

  • Develop, monitor, and manage fleet and equipment budgets, including capital expenditures (CapEx) and operating expenses (OpEx).
  • Lead CapEx planning for fleet and equipment, including annual budgeting, long-range capital planning, and replacement forecasting.
  • Analyze total cost of ownership (TCO), lifecycle costs, depreciation, and return on investment (ROI) for vehicles and equipment.
  • Track and report on fleet-related expenses such as fuel, maintenance, repairs, leases, insurance, licensing, and taxes.
  • Prepare regular financial reports, forecasts, trends, variance analyses, and data driven insights for leadership.
  • Produce monthly executive dashboards including, but not limited to: Cost per hour / mile / unit, Utilization and availability, Maintenance cost trends, Capital efficiency and ROI

Operational Integration

  • Partner with Fleet Operations and Field Leadership to align maintenance and utilization practices with financial outcomes.
  • Ensure operational decisions are made with cost transparency and capital awareness.
  • Act as the neutral financial voice when operational and executive priorities diverge
  • Recommends all fleet capital investments and dispositions.
  • Approves routine replacements and overhauls within ownership-approved thresholds.
  • Escalates strategic or material capital decisions to executive leadership and ownership.

Governance & Controls

  • Develop and document processes and maintain data integrity.
  • Establish approval frameworks for fleet purchases, replacements, and major repairs.
  • Ensure compliance with internal capital policies, lender requirements, and audit standards.
  • Oversee vendor financial performance, warranties, and long-term service agreements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration
  • Five years in a financial analysis role and demonstrated success in Fleet and logistics analysis
  • Ability to take complex analysis and data digestible for business leaders decision making
  • Strong analytical and communication skills
  • Project management skills


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in construction industry, specifically fleet & equipment analysis
  • Masters degree or CPA
  • Experienced in working through the complexities of a matrix organization
  • Ability to support complex projects and analysis
