Position Summary

The Fleet Manager is responsible for leading a team of Mechanics and overseeing the maintenance of large, medium and light duty vehicles and all other equipment to ensure a safe and efficient fleet. Will direct preventative maintenance as well as emergency breakdown work. This role will also manage the shop including processes, parts inventory, and is responsible for key programs in the company regarding GPS/in-vehicle camera systems.

  • Lead, educate and develop a team of 3-5 mechanics
  • Monitor employee’s performance and be accessible to all areas of the shop daily for guidance
  • Plan and schedule the department daily workload
  • Provide support to the operations team regarding all fleet and equipment related issues
  • Monitor and analyze opportunities to cut costs and improve department efficiencies
  • Monitor department budget and expenditures
  • Review and analyze monthly expenses and vehicle/driver analytics (i.e., driving behaviors, fuel, mileage, idling)
  • Monitor driver behavior and manage the GPS/Camera tracking accounts
  • Implement and manage driver and equipment training for end users
  • Complete administrative functions; including payroll approval, repair order maintenance and compliance documentation
  • Drive behaviors to ensure a clean, orderly and safe working area and equipment
  • Communicate with team to ensure field operations and the company’s needs are met
  • Identify and monitor equipment sent to outside sources for repairs
  • Comply with all applicable laws (Federal-State DOT & OSHA) regulations, as well as company policies and procedures
  • Keep track of aging equipment and make recommendations on when to replace
  • Manage a remote fleet of equipment
  • Performs other duties as required

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Knowledgeable in all areas of fleet mechanics including all types of vehicles, heavy equipment and small engine repair
  • Ability to look at all business needs and prioritize repair schedule, while building in flexibility for emergency breakdowns
  • Have an eye for cost savings
  • Understand equipment/vehicle end of life scheduling and sell off
  • Tech savvy to handle department administrative tasks (payroll etc) as well as manage and report on GPS and vehicle camera monitoring systems
  • Ability to handle competing priorities

Education/Experience/Licenses

  • High school diploma or equivalent - required
  • Progressive career from mechanic to management working on gas/diesel engines and fleet maintenance or in an operations capacity - required
  • 5+ years' experience technician/mechanic experience - required
  • Of the 5+ years' experience, 2+ of those years must be in fleet management and supervising a small team - required
  • Must be able to travel locally and out of town based on business needs - required
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills (documentation, communication with peers, supervisors, etc.) - required
  • Bilingual English/Spanish - preferred
  • Solid computer skills and comfortable with Microsoft Suite (excel, outlook, PowerPoint) - required
  • Prior RTA Fleet Management system experience - preferred
  • Experience in a broad range of landscape maintenance and construction equipment - preferred

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • This role will manage the team of mechanics (3-5 people)

Work Environment

  •  Ability to work in extreme conditions – temperatures may exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Ability to work in direct sunlight for extended periods of time
  • Exposure to heavy traffic areas while performing the duties of the job
  • Exposure to considerable amounts of dust, diesel fumes and noise
  • Exposure to climate conditions of the geographic area while working away from then normal work area along highways, streets and overpasses
  • Exposure to chemicals, oils, greases and other irritants

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to enter and exit the driver’s compartment of the truck and/or behind cab using normally available foothold and handholds
  • Ability to move and position objects weighing up to 50 lbs. (equipment parts)
  • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions
  • Ability to bend, stoop and twist continuously throughout the day

Travel Required

  •  Local daily and rare overnight state-wide travel based on business needs

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $80,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
