- Reading and Interpreting Plans: Reviewing technical drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine insulation requirements, dimensions, and material types for jackets.
- Measuring and Cutting Materials: Accurately measuring and cutting various insulation materials (e.g., fiberglass, mineral wool) and outer jacketing fabrics (e.g., specialized textiles, sometimes with metal sheet components) to fit the specific equipment or piping.
- Stitching and Assembly: Operating industrial sewing machines (single, double, or multi-needle) and using hand-stitching techniques to assemble and finish the insulation jackets.
- Ensuring Quality Standards: Performing quality control checks on finished jackets to ensure they meet client specifications, industry standards, and safety protocols.
- Installing and Sealing: Assisting with the installation of jackets, securing them with staples, tape, wiring, or screws, and installing vapor barriers to protect against moisture and air leaks.
- Maintaining Equipment: Performing minor maintenance and troubleshooting on sewing machines and other tools to ensure optimal working condition.
- Safety and Compliance: Adhering strictly to occupational health and safety (OHS) procedures and using necessary protective gear due to exposure to irritants or other site hazards.
- Collaboration: Working effectively as part of a team, coordinating with insulators, sheet metal fitters, and supervisors to meet project deadlines.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Skills: Proven experience with industrial sewing machines, knowledge of garment/jacket construction, and proficiency in hand-stitching techniques.
- Attention to Detail: High level of precision and accuracy to spot defects and ensure all items meet required standards.
- Physical Stamina: The ability to work in various environments (sometimes confined spaces or at heights), which may involve standing for long periods, bending, and kneeling.
- Communication: Strong ability to understand technical instructions and communicate effectively with team members and supervisors.
- Problem-Solving: Ability to quickly diagnose issues with materials, machinery, or fit and implement effective solutions.
