Job Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Forensic Examiner, Registered Nurse (RN) to join our specialized forensic team as a regional traveler for our evening swing and overnight regional traveling position. The regional travel area is within a 15 county radius in Southwest Ohio to encompass the Cincinnati, Dayton area. In this vital role, you will apply your nursing expertise to assist in the investigation of criminal cases, obtaining forensic photography, providing critical medical assessments, biological trace sample collection, and documentation. Your energetic approach will contribute to advancing justice while ensuring the highest standards of patient care and legal compliance. This position offers an exciting opportunity to combine forensic science with advanced nursing skills in a dynamic environment committed to integrity and excellence. This is a hybrid home based position where you will respond from home to any contracted facility when paged through our dispatch to complete a detailed forensic exam. Candidate must live within the Southwest Ohio area. Out of state candidates will not be considered.

Forensic Examiner Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough physical examinations and assessments of individuals involved in forensic investigations, including trauma evaluations and injury documentation
  • Collect, process, and document biological specimens or evidence following strict aseptic techniques and chain-of-custody protocols
  • Assist in forensic procedures such as maintaining sterile environments, forensic photography, utilization of an alternative light source for DNA detection, forensic medical head to toe detailed assessment
  • Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and medical examiners to provide expert medical insights relevant to criminal investigations
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records using EMR (Electronic Medical Records) systems such as Cerner or Athenahealth, ensuring compliance with HIPAA regulations
  • Provide expert testimony in legal proceedings based on thorough case documentation and findings
  • Support ongoing training in areas such as forensic trauma medicine, infectious disease care as applicable to our population foci

Requirements

  • Valid Ohio RN license with current state registration and licensing requirements met
  • Residence within the southwest Ohio area
  • Valid Driver's License with no suspensions within the last 5 years
  • Current automobile insurance
  • Proven experience in critical care settings such as ICU, emergency room, or trauma centers; Level I or Level II trauma center experience preferred
  • Minimum of a bachelor’s in nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), MSN preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology relevant to forensic assessments
  • Experience with laboratory procedures including specimen collection/processing and phlebotomy
  • Familiarity with EMR/EHR systems
  • Ability to perform detailed physical examinations and utilize aseptic techniques effectively
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and providing courtroom testimony
  • Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities or in settings such as assisted living or long-term care is advantageous
  • Ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism while maintaining a lively, motivated attitude.
