The Bisbing Forest Ecology & Silviculture Lab at the University of Nevada, Reno is hiring two full-time, temporary Forestry & Regeneration Ecology Crew Leads to support the Sierra Nevada Adaptive Management Experiment (AMEX). These positions will lead field crews conducting integrated forest ecology and regeneration research across mixed-conifer forests of the Sierra Nevada in California. The primary responsibilities of this leadership position include coordinating daily field activities, planning of crew logistics, tracking and submission of timesheets, and data management.
Description
Crew Leads will oversee field operations spanning permanent forest inventory and sampling efforts and long-term regeneration provenance trials (i.e., baby tree gardens) at multiple research sites. Common daily tasks include installing and re-surveying permanent plots, collecting pre- and post-treatment data on overstory trees, tree regeneration, fuels, plant communities, and forest health, measuring seedling survival and growth, maintaining planting sites, downloading and managing weather and temperature data, maintaining field equipment, ensuring data quality, and communicating regularly with lab personnel. The position requires strong leadership, organization, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in remote field settings. Fieldwork involves long hikes with heavy packs, work in burned areas and challenging terrain, and variable weather conditions.
Location & Logistics
These positions are located in California with work conducted across multiple Sierra Nevada sites. Crew members are expected to live on-site and travel between locations for the duration of the position. Housing will primarily consist of non-traditional accommodations such as tents or trailers, though barracks may be available at select sites. No per diem or food stipend is provided. A field vehicle with coolers, stove/propane, table, and basic kitchenware is supplied.
