Foster Care Manager

Demonstrable oral and written (English, +/- Spanish) communication skills required. Demonstratable computer, phone, and data entry skills.

Job Summary

Coordinate and maintain the foster department; supervise Foster Care Coordinators. Counsel, train, & educate (within the guidelines and philosophy of Animal Humane) foster caregivers & program volunteers. Accurately distribute information and answer questions regarding current Animal Humane programs. Recruit, train, and maintain a pool of foster parents for our Foster Care programs including but not limited to: Fetch Some Fun, underage puppies, and kittens, medical fosters, and behavior fosters. Coordinate the care of pets in foster homes and any pets housed in our Foster Care office.

Responsibilities

  • Working collaboratively with Foster Care Coordinator to maintain a database of foster families through recruitment, selection, training, and ultimately coordinate placement of pets into foster homes.
  • Identify barriers to fostering for the general public and implement policies in coordination with the Director of Lifesaving Programs (DLP) to make fostering more accessible.
  • Responsible for husbandry, medicating, and understanding/executing basic medical treatments as directed for pets housed in the Foster Care office and pets in foster homes.
  • Always handle pets humanely.
  • Provide first aid and directed medical care to pets in Foster Care as per DLP and Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) developed protocols and algorithms.
  • Always maintain a safe and clean environment for the pets and the public.
  • Work as a team with all areas of Animal Humane and maintain a high level of professionalism as a representative of Animal Humane.
  • Responsible for data entry and record keeping of all foster pets.
  • Ensure monthly and annual reports are completed.
  • Maintain office and medical supplies inventory.
  • Demonstratable leadership of caregivers, volunteers, and staff through hands-on training and teaching educational courses.
  • In collaboration with DLP, and Development/Marketing Team, contribute content to Animal Humane’s social media streams to optimize effective messaging and promote growth of foster program.
  • Hiring, training, and supervising of Foster Care employees. Direct on the job training to develop skills, advise performance requirements/progress, discuss corrective measures to improve performance requirements & their progress, resolve complaints, maintain effective employee management communication.
  • Must be able to manage emotional aspect of end-of-life services and humane euthanasia, and support employees in high-emotion circumstances.
  • Responsible for on-call coverage and weekend shift hours, as needed/scheduled.
  • Responsible for contacting emergency hospital for ER care of foster pets and determining outcomes (treatment vs euthanasia) utilizing budgetary and program restrictions for guidance created by DLP and CVO.
  • Serve as a point of contact for Foster Coordinators when Foster Caregivers are not abiding by AHNM foster policies. Resolve issues within the parameters of the policies laid out by DLP and Executive Director.
  • Organization and planning of volunteer appreciation events and other annual events.
  • Build and review budget in collaboration with DLP.
  • Other tasks and duties as assigned.

Job Conditions

Indoor/Outdoor facility is often exposed to the elements. The activity includes both seated office duties as well as animal management activities, which may include handling animals that are fractious or excited. This includes pets that may weigh over 50 pounds. Some of the work is done standing, kneeling, walking, and bending. Urine and feces are often present, as are a variety of hazardous chemical agents. Workers are exposed to animal bites, various viruses, needles and other sharp objects. Regularly exposed to strong and pungent odors.

Education

Typically requires high school education or equivalent. Basic computer skills required. Graduate of animal health/technician school preferred.

Experience

At least two years working with animals in a professional setting (or two years educational experience to substitute) preferred; a minimum of two years direct supervisory experience, a working knowledge of management practices, at least one year working with general public in a professional setting preferred. Intermediate experience in using Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Animal handling and restraint skills are required.
  • Must be able to lift 35 pounds unassisted and over 35 pounds with assistance regularly.
  • Must be able to solve practical problems and deal with variables in deadline-driven situations.
  • Must have a working knowledge of animal behavior, handling, and restraint. Must have an awareness of safety issues inherent in an environment in which animal bites/scratches pose a risk.
  • Must exhibit compassionate regard for pets and people.
  • Must have strong conflict resolution skills.

Pay: From $22.00 per hour
