Freelance Production Designer (Part-Time)

Overview
Walsh|Sheppard is seeking a freelance production designer to support our art department on an ongoing basis. This role is best suited for a highly technical designer who is strong in production, fast and accurate with revisions, and comfortable taking established creative direction and carrying work across the finish line.

This is not a concept-heavy design role. We are looking for someone who can step into active projects, work from rough designs or clear direction, and produce polished final materials efficiently and reliably. The right candidate will be comfortable handling detailed edit requests, meeting turnaround requirements, and maintaining high standards for quality, consistency, and file organization.

While the role is fully remote, we have a strong preference for Alaska-based candidates! You are welcome to do your work at the Walsh|Sheppard office in downtown Anchorage, and you will be given first pick if/when our art department is ready to expand to hire for full-time positions. Our offices are open during normal business hours, Monday through Friday. Applicants may be asked to occasionally meet with members of the art department during those times. Students are encouraged to apply!

Who We Are Looking For

  • A technically strong production designer who is dependable, efficient, and easy to work with.
  • Someone who takes direction well and does not need every step explained.
  • Someone who can move projects from rough direction to polished execution.
  • Someone who is comfortable with detailed revisions and can respond quickly when deadlines are tight.
  • Someone who understands that support roles are critical to the quality and speed of the whole creative team.

Responsibilities

  • Support the art department by executing and refining creative materials across print and digital channels.
  • Take rough designs, markups, or established creative direction and turn them into polished final deliverables.
  • Handle production tasks such as layout refinement, resizing, versioning, formatting, file prep, and export.
  • Apply brand standards consistently across a wide range of client materials.
  • Incorporate detailed feedback and revision requests accurately and efficiently.
  • Prepare files for internal review, client presentation, publication, print, or vendor handoff.
  • Maintain organized files and follow naming, storage, and packaging conventions that support team collaboration.
  • Communicate clearly about progress, questions, and timing so work stays on track.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong technical skills in Adobe Creative Suite, especially InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop.
  • Strong working ability in Canva.
  • Strong working ability in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel (especially for setting up customized, branded slide deck templates, letterhead, etc.)
  • Excellent production design skills, including layout, typography, file setup, formatting, and export for both print and digital use.
  • Ability to take incomplete or rough creative direction and produce clean, polished deliverables with minimal oversight.
  • Strong written English skills and the ability to understand nuanced, detailed feedback.
  • Excellent attention to detail and consistency.
  • Ability to work quickly without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills, including file management and version control.
  • Reliable internet access and dependable availability during the required overlap with Alaska time.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting an in-house creative team, agency art department, or marketing department.
  • Experience preparing a variety of deliverables, including social graphics, ad units, presentations, print collateral, digital assets, and branded templates.
  • Comfort working across multiple brands, clients, and visual systems.
  • Experience in PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Figma is a plus.
