Star Local Media is a digital-first community media company covering high school and local sports across North Texas. We focus on in-depth, hyper-local coverage that highlights student-athletes, teams, and programs that are often overlooked by larger outlets.

We are seeking freelance sports reporters to contribute game coverage, previews, recaps, and feature stories on a per-assignment basis.

Position Overview

Freelance Sports Reporters will primarily cover high school athletics across Star Local Media’s coverage area. Assignments are provided by Star Local Media editors, with opportunities to pitch story ideas.

This role can be completed fully remote when appropriate (such as recaps, features, or stat-based stories), though attending games or events in person is preferred when available. Strong local sports knowledge is required.

Responsibilities

• Write assigned sports stories, including:
• Game recaps
• Previews
• Player and team features
• Weekly roundups
• Cover high school sports such as football, basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball, soccer, and more
• Gather accurate stats, quotes, and game details
• Communicate with coaches, athletes, and school staff as needed
• Meet deadlines, including same-night or next-day turnaround when required
• Follow AP Style and Star Local Media editorial standards
• Coordinate with editors on assignments, schedules, and coverage needs

Qualifications

• Entry-level or experienced sports reporters encouraged to apply
• Strong sports writing and storytelling skills
• Knowledge of high school athletics preferred
• Ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines
• Familiarity with North Texas schools and programs is a plus
• Journalism degree or equivalent experience helpful but not required

Compensation

• Paid per assignment
• Typical range: $35–$50 per story, based on scope, turnaround time, and complexity

• Freelancers receive bylines as a Special Contributor to Star Local Media
• All work may be used in personal portfolios
• Assignments are provided by Star Local Media, with openness to story ideas
• This is a 1099 contract position, not a full-time role

Pay: $35.00 - $1,000.00 per month
