9th Grade Seminar Teacher

About the Role

The 9th Grade Seminar Teacher is a cornerstone of the freshman experience at Prep Charter. Meeting with students twice per week, this teacher helps incoming 9th graders build the executive functioning skills, social-emotional awareness, and career readiness they need to succeed in high school and beyond—while serving as a steady, trusted adult during one of the most important transitions of their lives.

Key Responsibilities

Executive Functioning Instruction

• Teach and reinforce study skills, time management, organization, and planning strategies explicitly and consistently throughout the year
• Help students build and maintain systems for tracking assignments, deadlines, and long-term projects across all of their classes
• Collaborate with 9th grade content teachers to identify students who need additional executive functioning support and coordinate interventions
• Use data—including grades, attendance, and teacher input—to track student progress and adjust instruction accordingly

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL)

• Facilitate structured SEL lessons aligned with a recognized framework (e.g., CASEL) covering self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, relationship skills, and social awareness
• Create a consistent and inclusive seminar environment where students feel safe to reflect, share, and grow
• Support students through the social challenges of 9th grade: navigating new friendships, peer pressure, identity, and the transition from middle school
• Identify students who may be struggling emotionally or socially and connect them with school counselors or support staff in a timely way

Career Development & Future Readiness

• Introduce students to career exploration tools, interest inventories, and pathways aligned with the school’s college and career mission
• Support students in beginning to articulate their strengths, interests, and goals through reflection activities and structured discussions
• Lay the groundwork for future work in resume-writing, internships, and post-secondary planning by building foundational career awareness in 9th grade
• Connect academic work to real-world relevance, helping students understand why their effort in school matters

High School Transition Support

• Proactively support students in adjusting to the academic rigor, expectations, and culture of high school
• Orient students to school policies, grading systems, support resources, and pathways to success at Prep Charter
• Conduct regular check-ins, both whole-class and one-on-one, to gauge how students are adjusting and address concerns early

9th Grade Team & Culture

• Serve as an active member of the 9th grade team, attending team meetings and contributing to shared planning and strategy
• Help shape the identity, norms, and traditions of the freshman class—building a sense of belonging and pride in being part of Prep Charter
• Partner with 9th grade content teachers, the school counselor, and school leadership to create a unified, supportive experience for all freshmen

Qualifications

Required

• Bachelor’s degree required; degree in education, counseling, psychology, or related field strongly preferred
• Experience working with adolescents in an educational, youth development, or counseling setting
• Deep belief in the potential of every student and a commitment to equity and high expectations
• Strong relationship-building skills with students, families, and colleagues
• Ability to facilitate engaging, student-centered discussions and activities

Preferred

• Experience teaching or facilitating SEL, advisory, or seminar-style courses
• Experience working in an urban school setting
• Knowledge of college access and career development tools for high school students

Pay: $55,000.00 - $65,000.00 per year
