Summary:
The FSQA (Food Safety and Quality Assurance) Seafood Lab Assistant is responsible for supporting the operations of a seafood laboratory, specifically focused on ensuring the safety and quality of seafood products. This role involves assisting with various laboratory tasks, conducting tests and analyses, and maintaining accurate records. The lab assistant works closely with the FSQA team to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to uphold the highest quality standards in seafood processing.
Essential Functions:
Collects samples of seafood products from various stages of production and preparing them for analysis. This may involve following specific protocols for sample collection, labeling, and preservation to maintain sample integrity.
Performs a range of tests and analyses on seafood samples to assess their safety and quality. This includes microbiological testing, chemical analysis, sensory evaluation, and other relevant tests as per regulatory requirements and industry standards.
Assists with the maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment to ensure accurate and reliable test results. This may involve routine cleaning, calibration checks, and reporting any equipment malfunctions or issues to the appropriate personnel.
Follows established protocols, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and regulatory guidelines to ensure compliance with food safety and quality standards. This includes adhering to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and participating in quality control activities to maintain the accuracy and reliability of laboratory testing.
Collaborating with the FSQA team and other relevant stakeholders to communicate test results, addresses any concerns or deviations, and contributes to continuous improvement efforts. Effective communication skills are essential for conveying information accurately and promptly.
May provide support for FSQA responsibilities beyond laboratory tasks.
Ensures the availability of necessary laboratory supplies and testing media.
This is a nonexempt position with an hourly rate of $24.00-$26.75 per hour.

Required Qualifications: (Education, Years of Experience, Certifications)
High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Education & Experiences:
Previous FSQA Laboratory or food production experience is a preferred, but not required
Associate's degree or higher in a relevant field such as food science, biology, or chemistry
Familiarity with : 3M petrifilm, ATP luminometers, BRC, HACCP
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):
Knowledge of production processes, food safety and quality controls typically required in a food manufacturing environment
Basic understanding of food microbiology and aseptic techniques.
Skills:
Strong attention to detail and accurate data recording.
Strong Time Management skills.
Strong communication skills to effectively give direction or share information.
Abilities:
Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced work environment.
Ability to follow detailed written procedures and laboratory protocols.
Ability to work independently and collaborate across departments
Work Environment:
While performing the duties of the job employees will be exposed to warm humid environments as well as short term exposure to freezing temperatures. Will be required to distinguish shades of color to identify abnormalities and/or defects in food products.
Work Ability Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms.
The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance.
