ADIGITAL EVIDENCE TECHNICIAN

Pay Grade: GRADE 135: $54,858.23 - $79,544.43 Annual Salary / $26.37 - $38.24 Hourly

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Merit, Full-Time, Eligible for benefits.

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs various tasks related to assisting the Ogden City Prosecutor's Office. Applicants will manage, maintain, and oversee evidence for all physical and digital evidence that is reviewed for data collection to ensure the successful prosecution of city cases. Applicants will also perform various clerical tasks to support the division. Direction will be provided by the Prosecuting Attorneys and Legal Office Administrator.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Review, document, analyze, and organize video from body cameras, dash cameras, surveillance systems, and other digital media for trial use.
  • Review, document, and organize non-digital evidence for trial use.
  • Review and summarize recordings of jail phone calls, including transcription or flagging of relevant portions.
  • Prepare and file trial disclosures with the court in compliance with the Utah Rules of Criminal Procedure.
  • Prepare exhibits for use at trial, including digital and physical exhibits.
  • Assist prosecutors in preparing witnesses for trial.
  • Update Prosecutor by Karpel case management software with court orders, decisions, trial preparation notes, and daily calendar updates.
  • Compile and maintain accurate records of evidence and trial preparation work.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing, with attorneys, court staff, and law enforcement.
  • Participate in safety and risk management activities; take action to reduce liability to the city.
  • Attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this position. Employees are required to work collaboratively and frequently meet with attorneys and staff.
  • Perform other related duties as required/assigned.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Utah Driver's License.
  • Employees will be required to complete NIMS IS100, IS200, IS700, and IS800 within one year of hire.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • At least two years of experience in criminal justice, law enforcement, digital evidence review, or a related field.
  • Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice, Law Enforcement, or a related field.
  • An equivalent combination of the above-stated work experience and education is acceptable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the criminal justice system, including Utah Rules of Criminal Procedure related to discovery and trial disclosures.
  • Knowledge of handling, preservation, and organization of digital and physical evidence.
  • Knowledge of word processing techniques and software programs, including Microsoft Office and case management systems such as Prosecutor by Karpel.
  • Skill in managing, summarizing, and preparing digital media such as bodycam, dashcam, surveillance footage, and jail call recordings.
  • Skill in preparing trial disclosures and exhibits for court.
  • Skill in providing detailed and accurate records and summaries of evidence.
  • Skill in communicating clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with attorneys, law enforcement, and court staff.
  • The ability to maintain mental capacity allows for effective interaction and communication with others.
  • Ability to comply with all city policies and regulations, including safety and risk management standards.

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • The work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate.
  • The work is sedentary to light work, which requires exerting up to 25 pounds of force occasionally, 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more) distances, identify and distinguish colors, observe an area that can be seen up and down or the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, and adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
  • Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: standing, walking, sitting, using hands and fingers to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, crouching, talking, and hearing.
