Full Stack Developer position at Otani Trading

(Proficiency in Python and Javascript required)

Who we are

Otani Trading is a family-owned business founded in 1922 and headquartered in Niigata, Japan. Operations include dealing in tools & machinery, engineering services, software development, foods & beverages, and cut flowers. Otani's international expansion began in Singapore in 2018 and has since grown to having offices in Vietnam, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. In order to cater to increased demand in the Middle East and beyond, an office was set up in Dubai Silicon Oasis in 2022.

What we do

At our Dubai office, we arrange wholesale cut flower shipments to/from over 25 countries in the form of triangular trade through our in-house developed B2B portal (www.flowermeister.com) that connects flower growers from around the world with flower importers around the world. We also provide various software and hardware solutions for flower farms, flower exporters, flower importers, flower wholesalers, flower shops, logistics companies, and other companies involved in the flower industry. We are in a unique position to be able to offer IT and automation solutions to the flower industry as experts in both engineering and international flower trade. Of course, the long term plan is to venture outside the flower industry to do factory automation, supply chain solutions, and general software and automation projects around the region.

We are clearly looking for the latter. We are looking for members to join our newly established Dubai development team who actively want to create new value using new technologies, methods, and principles. People who are tired of the limited scope they are currently given and want to do more may find their calling with Otani.

You may think that the flower world is far from the technological epicenter, but we do create and maintain several systems, some developed using cloud native designs connecting thousands of B2B users, and others interacting with industrial equipment and IoT devices, and yet others with direct integrations with banks and other fintech companies processing millions of dollars monthly. Deployments range from serverless cloud solutions via Infrastructure as Code to on-premise setups with direct interactions with various equipment and machinery. Data Science also comes into play leveraging Machine Learning techniques for recommendation systems, sensor data analysis, production yield predictions, and anomaly detection.

In short, we are looking for candidates that want to go beyond traditional Full Stack development.

Although Otani Trading is over 100 years old, our Dubai operation is essentially a start-up. We are therefore looking for candidates who wish to create their own career paths while creating a new business, rather than follow a rigid job description with a constrained scope and a pre-defined career path.

Enthusiasm to keep learning and an interest in creating something new are far more important than any previous experience.

The Details

Salary : AED7,000 ~ AED10,000

Responsibilities:
(not everything at the same time)

• Design high-level architecture
• Design/maintain cloud infrastructure
• Design/maintain CI/CD pipelines
• Design/maintain database systems
• Design security implementations
• Work with IoT devices and industrial equipment
• Write frontend code
• Write backend code
• Work with various internal IT teams
• Communicate with internal and external stakeholders
• Implement/maintain various related systems

Requirement

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or engineering-related disciplines
• Proficiency in Python and Javascript
• Ability to work independently
• Experience with AWS or other cloud service providers is a plus
• Passion to continue learning new technologies
• Motivation to create own career path
• Be good at something, but be interested in everything!

What languages/technologies/frameworks we use will depend on the project requirements, but we primarily use Python on the backend and Javascript on the front end, deployed in a serverless manner as much as possible. However, we also have on-premise deployments, and if interactions with industrial equipment or IoT devices are needed, Java or C may also be used.

We do not expect candidates to be experts in all the above-mentioned areas, but we do expect everyone to have rudimentary knowledge, but more importantly interest, in all areas with expertise in at least one of the areas.
