Let’s Talk About Cake For a Moment.
Working with dogs is the frosting—the part everyone gets excited about, but it's only a small part of the job.
The cake is the core of the job: structure, reliability, and physical work that keep everything running. It’s a more substantial kind of sweetness—different from the frosting, but deeply rewarding.
The cake looks like this:
-
Starting your route on time every day — dogs can’t reschedule their walks
-
Driving between client homes — your car is your office
-
Walking 10–15 miles a day — in all weather conditions
-
Showing up consistently — even when the weather is miserable
-
Working independently — no one is looking over your shoulder during the day
-
Being accountable to human clients first — their homes, schedules, and expectations come first
That’s the cake—about 95% of the job: walking in the rain, picking up poop, getting splashed while drying off, driving on snowy roads. The frosting is cuddling the dog after everything else is done—about 5%.
